It should do more than just come back. At the cost of dicontinuing paradox pokemon and gigantamax, The national dex should be reorganized into something bigger like Planet Dex or World dex.

There is a possibility with legends Z-A it is a modified version of the old engine so less resources wasted on that so they have more than enough time and resources to polish it and add more content (compared to making a new engine from scratch) like with the 3DS era.

Yeah at this point making new everything is a waste of time and resources, like look at the Like a Dragon series using the same engine and graphics since 2016 pumping out large scale games every 1-2 years. If they set Scarlet/Violet as the standard for the engine then it gives them freedom to invest resources in, like, restoring the national dex. Also let's be honest, the Pokemon models from Scarlet/Violet are good enough, I doubt in Sun/Moon they made new models for existing Pokemon.

Also making the National Dex paid is somehow a worse implementation of it because it was a free feature and always was a free feature, it's not like Bank and Home which was always paid (even back in gen 3). Like unless people have set the bar so low that they are ok with anything then the amount of backlash will be large.

I hope they don’t use the scarlet and violet engine and I know it might be a hot take but scarlet and violet probably had the worst art style of a mainline pokemon and probably ran the worst of a mainline pokemon game also

I mean the engine is fine but has potential to be something great if more time is put into it, they could revert the artstyle to the Sword/Shield look and just polish up the graphics there.

I feel like that defeats the purpose of bringing back the national dex unless you wanna have a foreign dex including the ultra beasts and paradox mons.

Scarlet and Violet's engine is terrible. I don't think it should be the basis for future games.

Honestly I think they need to postpone releases for a while and take the time to reevaluate and reassess the series. Their development process, the engine, game mechanics... everything.

I suspect they are afraid of killing their golden goose. They do not understand why the forumla is successful, only that it is, so they preserve it, warts and all, to ensure that it keeps producing golden eggs.

Unfortunately that is not sustainable and they eggs eventually spoil, to extend the metaphor.

So they cut out popular new features like follow Pokémon, secret bases and fully customisable trainers, while preserving their torturously slow battle system and gameplay loop.

I think they need to reevaluate their game systems from the ground up, trim the fat, ensure they have a stable and optimised game engine and ensure that they have set themselves up for success going forward. Well begun is half done.

I had hoped that the delay for Z-A was a sign that something like that might be happening, but sadly it appears that we will be getting more of the same buggy, scrapped together gameplay if the leaks are to be believed. And I fear we will be back on the same old yearly release schedule (if not multi-release per year schedule) once Z-A is out.

For now the brand and the core gameplay are enough to sustain it through a few buggy releases, but if this continues, people are going to learn that things are not getting better and will simply walk away from the series.

It will be easier to fix the problems now and retain brand confidence than it will be to scrabble a new game together after the series starts to flop and regain lost trust.

The real trick is to work for the Pokemon company and persuade the bigwigs.
