On the move again after winning his fourth gym badge, Arlo was searching the route to the next gym, looking for any Pokemon he could battle with Duraludon and possibly add to his team. He knew that he had to have Duraludon cooperate with him, or else they might never form that bond that all the top trainers shared with their Pokemon. However, as Arlo saw the imposing skyscrapers of the next city rise over the horizon, he felt that that chance wouldn’t turn up before the next gym.

Arlo took out Duraludon’s Pokeball and whispered to it. “I hope that I get the chance to become your friend.”

When Arlo was about to put the Pokeball away, there was a rustling from the grass to his side, and a Manectric jumped out. It was the moment Arlo was waiting for, and he swiftly tossed the Pokeball, sending Duraludon out to battle.

Arlo checked his Pokedex to find out what moves Duraludon had. “Duraludon,” Arlo commanded, “use Dragon Claw!” Duraludon, instead of attacking the Manectric, just glared at Arlo and sat on the ground.

“Duraludon, use Dragon Claw!” Arlo repeated, but it had no effect on Duraludon. All the while, the wild Manectric kept biting at the Alloy Pokemon, slowly weakening it. Arlo didn’t want Duraludon to faint due to a thousand cuts– or, in this case, bites– so he tried again to have Duraludon attack.

“Duraludon,” he called out, “you have to attack! Please, use Dragon Claw!”

Arlo watched Duraludon carefully. He thought he saw the Pokemon look back in confirmation before it got up and struck the unsuspecting Manectric with its claw. It was Metal Claw, not Dragon Claw, but Arlo didn’t care. “You did it!” he exclaimed, with a wide grin on his face.

The Manectric flew back and landed on the ground panting. Quickly, Arlo tossed a Pokeball at it. The ball absorbed the Manectric and shook once, then twice, then three times before the button glowed green.

Arlo approached the Pokeball and picked it up. “Welcome to the team, Manectric,” he said, then turned to Duraludon.

“That was amazing!” Arlo announced, “You did such a good job!”

Duraludon avoided Arlo’s gaze as if it was trying to hide its emotions, but Arlo knew that Duraludon, even if it was still somewhat disobedient, began to warm up to him. Soon enough, they will become the best of friends.

“Duraludon, return!” Arlo called, sticking its Pokeball out with his arm. The Pokemon went back into it in a red glow. Arlo then turned towards the towering structures of the city, ready for his fifth gym battle.

Fun fact: with certain kinds of animals in real life, praise is actually a good training method! So Arlo is kind of training Duraludon to associate following orders with praise and positive attention here.
