    "Might" is a bit of an understatement.
    But I guess Pokémon wanted a new protagonist.

    Yeah. Ash achieved his dream and found a new one. Or he realized his dream wasn't what he thought. One of the two. Anyways, he didn't need to be the main character anymore because we saw him achieve what he was going for since day 1. Now, though, we have new people with different dreams. If Pokémon keeps going after they reach their goals I bet they'll do the same and change protagonists.
