is it or will it be possible to go pvp against one of your friends?

Yes its possible. Go to private match and have friend enter code.

you have to be able to contact that person outside of the game to share the password. thats the problem so far is you cant share that with anyone on the friends list with no chat feature. they could even add a "share battle code" button in the friends list and avoid the entire chat headache all together. would pop up an alert on friends screen saying "X" is waiting to play a private match with you, do you accept?

Yes, play vs friends in this game it's not very well thought, you need to be able to share a code with you friends… then go to "Battle" - "Versus" - "Private Match" and both enter the shared code and start the battle.
Btw I think a better way to do this would be to have a button directly in you friend profile to battle, or the same button in the friends list... I hope they add this feature soon.

Yes it is possible. In VS write a code, then share the code whit ur friend and play.
