I agree with you as well. They shouldn't get rid of Ash. Besides, the animation team aren't going to let Ash go just yet. His journey is far from over.

I haven't seen Horizons yet either, but I agree with their decision to retire Ash. Having become a regional Champion in Gen 7 and following up with a World Tournament in Gen 8 whereupon he comes World Champion, Ash didn't have anything left to prove or work with from a story standpoint. My major gripe with Journeys or Gen 8 was they did the World Tournament at the expense of the Galar region. Every Anime prior to Journeys showcased the region that they were in and all the characters therein. Journeys, by contrast, sacrificed Galar at the altar of the World Tournament. This denied us recurring instances of Hop, Marnie, Bede and meeting all of the Gym Leaders(only Bea and Raihan battled Ash in the Tournament, rest that appeared were cameo appearances).

@Lonestar85 There's also a good chance that that Ash might return, however it will all depend on how Horizons and the Gen 10 anime would perform.

Before we even start talking about Gen 10 Anime, we have to finish Gen 9 first. I'll get around to watching Horizons sometime soon. Being that Horizons is going to be a complete reboot, it'll be interesting to see how long it takes them to get to Paldea and start things. It took Indigo League 5 Episodes to get to the first Gym Battle(same amount of Episodes in Kalos no less) so it'll be a measuring stick to see how slow they take things.
