Do the remakes come too soon?

I love a pokemon game and will take any form I can get…but do the remakes come too soon? Thoughts?

To keep things simple, we'll base this on North America launches because Japan was always first early on. With respect to Generation 1(Kanto) and Red/Blue, they debuted in September of 98 with Yellow following up in October of 99. Fire Red and Leaf Green didn't debut until September of 2004 or a solid 6 years later. The remakes added Steel + Dark Types, Abilities and rebalanced Special Stat into Special Attack/Special Defense while vastly improving Bug and Ghost type Pokémon. 6 years may be a bit short, but the Japanese version came out in February of 96 so that's a good 8 years when you factor that in.

Generation 2(Johto) debuted with Gold/Silver in October of 2000(Crystal came 9 months later). HeartGold/SoulSilver didn't come until March of 2010 or roughly 9.5 years later. Came with Abilities and the new Physical/Special split that massively helped Pokémon like Feraligatr. To this day it's widely considered to be the best remake.

For Generation 3(Hoenn), it debuted with Ruby/Sapphire in March of 2003 while Emerald took a full two years(May of 2005) before it came out. Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire didn't come until November of 2014 or 11 years later. For fans of Hoenn, that's a long, long wait but it came with a new Fairy Type, Physical/Special split and the new Gen 6 mechanic of Mega Evolutions.

Finally, we have Generation 4(Sinnoh) that debuted with Diamond/Pearl in April of 2007(Platinum came nearly 2 years later). BDSP didn't come until November of 2021 or 14 years later. Nothing new other than the new Fairy type as they went out of their way to avoid updating much more. One can argue they made things worse but maybe that's Platinum's influence.

Anyways, given above, the answer to your question is a resounding no. The next one to logically get a remake would be Unova that came out in March of 2011 but they got sequels 18 months later in October of 2012. We're approaching 14 years as of next March. If remakes are coming, it'll be 2026 before we even get wind of it since Legends Z-A is 2025.

Thanks for your thorough answer! I’m curious, do you have a favourite remake / which game have you enjoyed the most so far?

I haven't played a remake yet. Probably should do so one of these days but my focus has been elsewhere. I've only played Gen 1(Yellow) and Gen 2(Gold) but everything I've seen/heard regarding remakes points to HG/SS being the best one. They took Gen 2 and kept everything that made it great while enhancing it with Gen 3/4 additions(Abilities + Physical/Special split did wonders for certain Pokémon like Azumarill). Part of me wants to try LGP/LGE sometime given its a remake for Yellow but I'm not a fan of the Pokémon GO mechanic for leveling and the lack of Johto Pokémon(including evolutions for Kanto Pokémon like Onix and Scyther). I do know about Yellow Legacy but I tend to shy away from Romhacks.

After the BDSP fiasco, yes for that one. I find ORAS so likable that I could see a remaster of it.
