defeat the pkmn league, catch all the Pokémon in the region (there are version exclusives so if you want to complete it you need to buy the opposite game), beat all the gym leaders and complete the post game story and catch all he available legendarires

basically exactly what @Pokemaster9293 said, but you don’t need the other version to get the version exclusives, most games with link trading have special trade codes set by the community that are just the Pokédex numbers of the version exclusive you have and its counterpart in the other game (0814-0815 for Stonjourner and Eiscue as an example)
