The elevators activate when a Guard down below presses a button to activate the lift. It's timed such that the magnetic seal unlocks and opens the doors prior to the elevator reaching the surface. It then closes, locks and the Elevator returns to the bottom, hence it's a one way Elevator.
The only way off this Arena is to exit through the 4 Gates and that obviously won't be happening unless you're the last one standing.

Sorry for delay(lunch break). Had to explain the Elevator to @clasingla because they Crit on the roll. You're free to strike back at any time once you've dealt with Longbow damage from Bob. Rather than fighting the Absol, probably a good idea to take down the Ranger(Ekans) because of that weapon of his.
