first of all THEY ARE NOWHERE NEAR AS COMPETENT AS TEAM ROCKET! I’m not particularly team rocket fan, but I know they are far superior than the explorers will EVER be.

The early anime episodes would get pretty dark. Ash gets crushed by a chandelier, gets lost in the wilderness and nearly freezes, almost gets blown up, and is on his own for most of it with his only help coming from two other kids. At least Liko has a cellphone. That said, it's a kid's cartoon and neither character shows any lasting effects of trauma.

At this point, Ash is the walking definition of a “Suffering Pokémon protagonist” :D Arguably they have both had their fair share of trauma, but the scale is skewed to Ash, simply because every other episode for like two decades he has faced either a life risking moment, or literally lost his life and come back in so many ways. I am super interested to see how Liko’s story develops though! Would be curious to see what you think Liko’s most singular traumatic event is, and same for Ash!
Wonder if Team Rocket has them both beat with how many times they’ve been blasted off :D0
