I've never done an in-game tournament before but I wanna say @Dragonfly102024 has, so I'd ask them.

Yep a doodle, we play the monthly in-game tournaments. 🙂.
I must say it can be extremely challenging.
There are three different pre scheduled time slots with a two hour window of play time each. The size of your team determines which time slot you/your team qualifies to play.
As of right now, we play in the 5-team vs 5-team, however you can sign up as a solo "team" or a 2 to 3 player team. The other teammates needed to fill in the 5 vs 5 format are randomly matched, I'm assuming similar to how ranked battles are matched.
The matches are using whichever stadium is current for ranked and have ban/draft phase similar to Masters/Legends ranked matches (but slightly different).
They do not use a bracket system but rather the points system to determine overall placement at the end. Actually, you receive rewards almost immediately after the tournament is over but have to wait until the next day's daily reset to find out your teams rankings. Oh, so every team starts out with a set amount of points. You win, you earn points. You lose, they subtract points.
It's up to you and your team how many matches you play and you can start at any time within the two hour window.
As for my opinion... I'll get to that in a bit.
I would also like to mention that the next North American servers tournament is for the weekend of the 20th. It is recommended that you sign up for the server that is closest to you to avoid lag issues, however I know it is possible to play on the other servers.
Also, your team can only sign up for one time slot for one server.
You are not allowed a substitution list so once you lock in your server and team, if a teammate is a no-show, then your team isn't allowed to play or add anyone else in.

It can be a mixed bunch of matches.
When you are on a team with 5 people and are going up against another team of 5 (no one was randomly assigned or matched on either team), you just never know if you'll be going up against a group of friends who only play casually or against a meta team or a team practicing for actual organized play.
Lately, we have ended up battling the same team more than once. So it either goes really good for us (because our play level and coordination is better) or not so well (because the opposing team seems almost broken).
Is it liked ranked? Yes. Definitely.
Ranked at Master level? Hmmmm.... For five people teams, yes, there are awesome battles in match.... or you can get swept aside. It all depends on your team and how well you all work together, know each others play style and patterns, and whether the other team is full on meta hardcore gamers or whatever you want to call them.
At the other team levels, it can be frustrating with who you get matched up with or you might end up with new battle buddies from the randomly matched teammates that fill in the 5 person teams.
