Yellow version doesn't have that Trade in Vermilion. They also don't have the trade for Jynx in Cerulean either but in its place we get Bulbasaur as a gift so that's a solid trade imo given how valuable it can be at that point in the game. Since I forgot that Erika can spawn Farfetch'd, I have to do it the old fashion way on Route 13/14. There is a good glitch catch in the following segment though that will interest you.

    Journal Entry#12: Blasting off again….

Timestamp is now at 15 hours and 47 minutes so short session to clear out Rocket Game Corner. I healed up at Pokemon Center and deposited Vulpix to grab Charmander(for a reason) and placed Sandslash at the top of the list and went into Rocket Game Corner like a hot knife through butter.

Defeated the guard by the poster and proceeded to defeat all Rocket Grunts on each subsequent floor. The 3rd Basement floor is of particular note because before you get to the stairs that takes you to a special area with a Grunt that has the Lift Key on 4th Basement floor, there's a Rocket Grunt at the end of the Maze that has a Drowzee that has a Special stat of 44. This matches Hitmonchan or a Fighting Dojo reward and a Fighting Type that honestly sucks due to Elemental punches + atrocious Special Stat.

Anyways, after glitch fighting the Grunt and backtracking to Route 24 to catch the prize(Using Charmander to weaken it), I grab the Lift Key from the Grunt on 4th floor, go to 2nd Basement floor and grab all the items in that maze before entering the Elevator and battling the Grunt on 1st basement floor upon exiting the Elevator. With the exit secure, I go back into the Elevator and go to 4th Basement floor and initiate another battle with the infamous duo.

Their Pokemon don't stand a chance with Dig so I sweep them aside. I put Lapras in the lead and start the fight with Giovanni. Onix and Rhyhorn go down fast and Persian takes a couple Body Slams before going down. Why Giovanni insists on using Guard Spec items is beyond me when I don't utilize stat lowering moves all that often. Anyways with Silph Scope in hand, I exit and heal at Pokemon Center.

Up next is Pokemon Tower, rival fight#5 and another glitch catch!

Editor's Note: I made a mistake on Entry#1 regarding the first rival fight. I've since made the correction so feel free to read it. TLDR: I got Vaporeon to face... Ugh.

    Journal Entry#13: PokeFlute Plus Koffing!

Before leaving Celadon for Lavender, I deposited Kadabra and made my way over to the west side of town that leads to Route 16. There resides a second path that can only be accessed with Cut and after passing through the Gate, you'll find the Fly HM(02) along with a patch of Grass that contains arguably the best Normal/Flying type roaming Kanto in Doduo. After catching one at level 22, I taught it Fly(yeah a flightless Bird can learn Fly but a winged Dragon can't... Gen 1 logic).

Anyways, I fly to Lavender and heal at the Center to mark it. I scale the Tower to find my Rival on the 2nd floor. The 5th rival fight ensues and is the first fight where you'll get a glimpse of his final team. He still opens with Spearow(now evolved into Fearow) so Magneton makes short work of it. He then brings in Vulpix, his fire alternative for Flareon and I just hate facing my favorite Pokemon 😭. Lapras defeats it and out comes Magnemite or his Electric alternative for Jolteon(meaning his Eevee will eventually evolve into Vaporeon). Swap to Sandslash and drop it. Out comes Sandshrew(who will become his lead going forward) so I swap to Lapras and soak it down. Finally he sends out his starter that he hasn't evolved yet and falls to a couple Body Slams.

He departs and I climb the tower, defeating every Channeler along the way with Butterfree and Sandslash since Gastly doesn't have Levitate yet and making good use of the Heal zone on the 5th floor. Due to that zone, this makes a great grinding spot as well since Gastly has solid speed and decent Special too from an EV perspective. I didn't find a Cubone since it's a 10% or less spawn rate but there is a glitch catch opportunity in Pokemon Tower for all three versions!

After calming the Spirit using a Poke Doll or using Silph Scope and battling it, Dig/Escape rope back to town and fly to Cerulean and Route 24. Glitch Fly back to Lavender and then battle the Gambler that has Fire types on Route 8. After defeating him, climb the Tower to the 7th floor. For Red/Blue players, you encounter three Rocket Grunts. The one that matters to you is the 2nd one and once you defeat their Drowzee, Dig/Escape Rope back to town and Fly back to Route 24. For Yellow players, you face the dynamic Duo again and this time Weezing has a Special stat of 55. Once defeated, immediately Dig/Escape Rope and fly to Route 24 to initiate an encounter with Koffing.

Koffing isn't available in Yellow at all so this isn't a Pokemon encounter you can just skip. Once caught, return to the 7th floor and speak to Mr.Fuji and acquire the PokeFlute. From here we have two paths we can take. Route 13/14/15 along the coast or Route 16/17/18 and Cycling Road. Just have to Wake and battle Snorlax on either path. Timestamp of 16 hours and 40 minutes.

Journal Entry#14: Fishing is a way of life

Reasonably short session with a timestamp of 17 hours and 29 minutes. After having acquired the PokeFlute, I awoke the Snorlax on Route 12 first and caught it. It and it's Route 16 cousin spawn in at level 30 so with a bit of training can be up to speed in no time. I seriously considered using it too since it shares the same typing as Tauros. Anyways, the reason I chose to do Route 12 first is because it gives me access to the Super Rod. Before acquiring it from the guru, there's a Rocker with Electric types(Dig for the win). Continued south and run into a secluded area with a Fisherman(w/ 2 Magikarp) and an Iron item. Then you encounter a Jr.Trainer with Nidoran/Nidorino, hence Butterfree took care of them before I arrive at my target: a Grass area that contains Farfetch'd. It's a perfect training ground for Fire and Psychic types as you'll find Oddish/Gloom, Bellsprout/Weepinbel and Pidgey/Pidgeotto but the goal is Farfetch'd at 5% spawn rate(Red/Blue players find Venonat).

Eventually I find one and get super lucky as I get one at level 31 with my final Great Ball. On Route 12 there's another Pokemon we can get and that is courtesy of the new Super Rod. Fishing Route 12 yields Horsea and I caught one at level 20. I also travel to Route 10 to fish Krabby(level 15), Route 24 to get Goldeen(level 30) and Route 23(near Viridian) to get Poliwag(level 25). Leaves just Magikarp(which is easy), Psyduck and Seel left for Water types at this point. I then fly back to Lavender and put myself through 5% spawn pain to get a 2nd Cubone(which with a 2nd one can now trade for Ricky the Machoke(evolved into Machamp) on Route 5).

I then go to Celadon and awake the route 16 Snorlax and prep for my slog through Cycling Road that contains a Glitch catch and a Grass catch. The Grass area is also my favorite training ground in the entire game.

Yes I was. Put myself through 5% spawn pain on Farfetch'd and Cubone. Could have waited on Krabby too because you can get them at a higher level on Seafoam. The others I caught become available at this point in the game with Shellder coming in the next part if I hadn't caught one yet. Magikarp can be fished just about anywhere(or I can go buy it from salesman if I wanted to) while Psyduck is a surf encounter on Route 6(or glitch encounter in Erika's Gym or against Giovanni in Rocket Hideout(Yellow only)). Seel is a Seafoam encounter unless there's a Trainer with a Special stat of 58 that I forgot(even then Seel isn't that hard).

I'll be doing the next session today and posting it later tonight or tomorrow. Got Poison and Fighting types to roll over. I also get Electabuzz in the next part as a teaser(it's one I can't get in Yellow).

@Hades0918 Figure you've been enjoying things so far. Here's next part.

Journal Entry#15: Bicycling while on Safari

Timestamp of 20 hours and 36 minutes and I still have more training to do for the next session involving Fuchsia Gym.

Anyways this is a rather time intensive segment that takes me from Celadon and down Routes 16/17/18(aka Cycling Road) and onto Fuchsia where I did three treks into the Safari Zone. Cycling Road has 16 Trainers that primarily utilize Fighting and Poison types so is a Psychic type paradise(Ground too). That meant Butterfree and Sandslash would get heavy use here.

The first 6 Trainers on Route 16 pose no issue before I turn south, down the slope of Route 17. Along the right side are two Cue Ball Trainers by the lone Grass area of the route and is the only place you can find Ponyta on Yellow. I caught one at level 28, picked up the hidden Rare Candy in the grass and defeated both Trainers. This Grass area is my favorite grinding spot in the entire game.

I then biked towards the middle where another Biker resided and defeated him quickly before flying to Cerulean for the next part. You see a Biker on the left side of Route 17 has a Muk with a Special stat of 53. This matches the value for Electabuzz, a Pokemon that cannot be obtained in Yellow version without trading for it. After glitch flying back to Celadon, I fight the Biker with Butterfree and defeat him rather easily before flying back to Route 24 to engage our Electric target. With the prize secured, I return to Cycling Road and defeat the remaining Trainers and then arrive in Fuchsia to heal up.

Fuchsia is important for two reasons. The first is because it has a Gym that I'll be tackling in the next Entry(currently training to prep for it) and the Safari Zone where rare Pokemon reside. Due to all the glitch encounters I've made so far, the only Pokemon that you need to acquire there are Magikarp(can also be obtained on Route 3 Pokemon Center via Salesman or any water source with an Old Rod), Dratini(rare find and I forget if a trainer would spawn one. At least the starting area has 20% spawn rate with Super Rod), Exeggcute(relatively easy to find and catch) and the two big Normal type problem childs in Kangaskahn and Tauros. Both of those are notorious for basically running after one turn, hence are a royal pain to get. If you run out of patience with Tauros, there is a Trainer on Route 20(I'll note them) that when glitch fought will spawn Tauros. Kangaskahn though must be caught here because it has a Hexadecimal value of 2 or is basically the 2nd Pokemon listed in memory(meaning it was the 2nd Pokemon ever created or was the 2nd one programmed). Since Pokemon cant get that low on Special stat, it has to be caught here and now and can't be glitched summoned.

Now my three treks went as follows. The first trek got the Gold Teeth and Surf HM(03) along with Magikarp(level 10) and Exeggcute(level 20) on my last Safari Ball. I spent most of my effort on trying to get Dratini but to no avail. Second trek was spent trying to get Kangaskahn but with time winding down, I shifted to fishing and managed to catch Dratini(level 10). My third trek pretty much epitomizes the saying of 3rd time is the charm because I not only caught Kangaskahn(level 28) but managed to run into and get Tauros(level 21) or my last team member. I will note that the game loves to taunt me with all the wild Cubone i ran into. I did run into a couple Scythers but no Pinsir, Tangela or Chansey(hence why I glitch catch them). Other Safari residents(Paras + Nidorans) we got long ago.

I exited the Zone and returned the Gold Teeth to the warden for the Strength HM(04) and taught it to my newest member to grab the Rare Candy in his house. I then spent the remainder of the session training and getting Tauros and other members up to speed. To illustrate how good Tauros is, it tanks a level 31 Dugtrio Dig attack(Crit too) and responds with a Crit Strength that OHKO's it despite being 4 levels lower. Can only imagine how it'll deal with Psychic types going forward. My present goal is to train to level 40 for the next segment. I'm nearly there but have more to do with Tauros at 32, Lapras, Magneton and Ninetales at 37, Sandslash at 40 and Butterfree at 43.

The next Entry will have two glitch catches and that includes the Gym Leader(yeah Gym Leaders on Yellow are really nice for glitch encounters). To tease the next segment, we got Omanyte(hence why I picked Dome Fossil) and Flareon, an Eevolution whom with training will get Ember attack at level 16(Jolteon and Vaporeon get Thundershock and Water Gun respectively at that level. Since you get Eevee at level 25, you can't benefit from that and why Vaporeon or Jolteon make the best options due to Surf and Thunderbolt respectively).

Btw some food for thought: Blue's final team will consist of Sandslash, Exeggutor, Alakazam, Ninetales, Magneton and Vaporeon. My team will be Magneton, Ninetales, Butterfree, Tauros, Lapras and Sandslash. I swear it's just a coincidence. 🤣

More like we think alike but really his team picks are understandable. Ninetales in Gen 1 has 100 base speed and 100 special. That's better than Charizard if you overlook Ninetales having next to no Physical moves or coverage and is certainly better than Flareon(65 base speed to this day hurts it).

Cloyster is one of the better Water/Ice types, although its Special could be better but I can't complain when it's Special Defense is now 45(40 points less). It is a decent alternative for Vaporeon and picking Lapras would mirror the player given you're gifted one at Silph(and I don't think Lapras and it's gentle nature fits his character).

Then there's Magneton with a base 120 Special... Aside from its speed, it can take a hit and can shock things rather well. Just doesn't have any coverage(Jolteon isn't much better but it's got the best Speed/Special combo for Electric if you ignore Zapdos). Electrode sucks, Electabuzz is meh and Raichu is too frail so that's Magneton by default if Jolteon isn't the pick.

Sandslash is a solid Ground type that doesn't suffer from mediocre speed or x4 Water/Grass. Exeggutor is one of the highest Base stat Psychic types in Gen 1 and why it got a 50 base stat nerf in Gen 2(-50 to Special Defense) and Alakazam is self-explanatory.

    I'll post next part tomorrow.

@Hades0918 Eh I'm up late and just finished a long slog. Might as well post it now while fresh. Some good info on here for ya. Also if you can tell me where I got the Journal title from, you get a 🍪

    Journal Entry#16: Step 1: Collect Pokemon. Step 2: ???? Step 3: Profit

Timestamp of 23 hours and 24 minutes or another long session and one that got a lot done in the process. I finished training to level 40 but Tauros took a break at level 38 because he hit a notable Special Stat(more on that later) and I needed a spot for Doduo to do Fly for the glitch catches.

Next on my agenda was Fuchsia Gym and the first Trainer on the left wasn't a pushover because the jump in difficulty is rather noticeable from Erika's Gym. Tack on the fact that the majority of the Pokemon here are Psychic types in a Poison Gym is rather ironic but also makes it a pain because they hit rather hard in return.

Now the interesting thing about this Gym is that it has two Glitch catches. The first one is Omanyte or the Helix Fossil Pokemon and why I took the Dome Fossil back on Mount Moon because now you'll have both once you reach Cinnabar and revive Kabuto. Omanyte is spawned from the first trainer on the right and their level 37 Hypno. Once defeated and target secured, I return and battle the rest of the trainers with Ninetales. I hit level 43 and notice my Special stat has hit 112 on Ninetales(more on the significance of that in a bit because Ninetales isn't the only one).

I leave the Gym, fly to Route 24 and glitch fly to Route 8 and battle a Trainer there in order to get my menu back and so that I can talk to Koga to initiate the Gym fight while still in a glitch state. You see Koga also yields an important glitch encounter that is exclusive to Yellow version. Namely Koga's Ace is a level 50 Venomoth(significant step up from a level 43 Muk on Red/Blue but it's a Bug so maybe not) and has a Special stat of 103. That number matches Flareon in the Hexadecimal list, hence yields a unique opportunity to get an Eevolution without having to evolve an Eevee or trade for one.

I send out Ninetales against his roster of Venonat and ace Venomoth and Flamethrower them to defeat with multiple Critical Hits, including on his Ace. Claim the badge, the ability to Surf outside of battle and succeed on catching Flareon on Route 24. Nice trifecta of perks.

I then decided to do Saffron City and the Fighting Dojo with Butterfree mowing them all down and claiming Hitmonlee as my prize considering that I already have Hitmonchan from Rocket Game Corner encounter.

With that out of the way I decide to tackle all the Team Rocket Trainers inside Silph(minus the rival, Jesse&James and Giovanni) since I wanted more Experience for where I intend to go next. Inside Silph are two more glitch catch opportunities. The first one is on floor 2 with a Scientist. You first have to battle a Rocket Grunt to get to him but once you glitch fight him, his Magneton has a Special Stat of 76. That matches Ditto or a RARE find in Pokemon Mansion basement(only place to find it too on Yellow version. Red/Blue have it easier with Route 15). With Ditto caught, I proceed to lay waste to the building, leaving No Trainer or Pokemon standing. When I hit the 5th floor, another glitch catch opportunity arises and it comes from yet another Scientist. He can be found on the left side by an Electronic door that can be opened with a Card key(which is also found on the 5th floor below his location). After defeating the scientist in a glitch state, his Magnemite will spawn Seel or a Water type Pokemon that we haven't encountered yet and is the final Pokemon in Seafoam Islands outside of Articuno.

Once Seel is captured, I return and finish rolling through the Building, floor by floor until no one is left to battle. My current roster is as follows: Tauros(level 38 and boxed right now), Ninetales(level 43), Lapras(level 42), Sandslash(level 44), Butterfree(level 45) and Magneton(level 41).

My plan is to now travel to Cinnabar Island and the reason why is because my Pokemon have particular Special stats that are of note. My Tauros has a Special stat of 72. This matches Jynx in the Hexadecimal list and is a Pokemon I cannot get on Yellow. My Magneton and Ninetales both have a special of 112 or the same as Weedle or another one I can't get on Yellow. My Butterfree has a Special stat of 102 or the same as Eevee(given I only get one and need to get one more, this matters).

So how does my Special stat fit into all of this? Well the glitch uses the Special stat of the last Pokemon encountered. Up to now this has been Trainers with a *known* value. Wild Pokemon have random values so getting the exact value needed is a crap shoot but there is a way to guarantee it and that way is via a unique and very rare Pokemon: *Ditto*

When Ditto transforms it copies the special stat of the Pokemon it copies. That means that if I encounter wild Ditto in a glitch state, I can force the Special stat I want by having it copy my Pokemon with the Special stat desired. This is known as the Ditto glitch and is basically an extra step to the Trainer Fly glitch. Once Ditto copies your Pokemon, you run and then Dig/Teleport/Escape Rope back to town and then fly back to the area where you initiate the glitch(Route 24). It works each and every time and is also how you duplicate items! You need a Special stat of 182-184 and it duplicates the item in the 6th slot of your item list. Kind of crazy how glitchy Gen 1 is no?

The plan is to Ditto catch Jynx, Weedle and Eevee along with Golem(Special stat of 49, Trainer in Viridian Gym has it), Meowth(Special stat of 77. A Trainer has this in Cinnabar Gym), Raichu(Special stat of 85), Ekans(Special stat of 108, Trainer has this on Victory Road), Mewtwo(Special stat of 131), Alakazam(special stat of 149... Sabrina comes so close on Yellow version with a Special of 148 on her level 50 Alakazam), Porygon(Special stat of 170) and Lickitung(Special stat of 11. Since I have low level Pokemon, I can easily get this!).

Once all of those Pokemon are glitch caught, it's simply a matter of catching remaining stragglers(Voltorb + Legendary Birds) and training + evolving everything I have to 100% the Dex.

Journal Entry#17: Two Birds, One Great Ball

Timestamp of 28 hours and 44 minutes or a bleeping long and painful session but a productive one for 100% Dex. I hate how hard it is to find Ditto on Yellow. Why couldn't it have been on Route 15 like it is on Red/Blue and at a higher spawn rate so my sanity doesn't evaporate.. but I digress.

To put it into context, I caught Lickitung, Jynx, Raichu, Eevee, Ekans, Weedle, Mewtwo, Psyduck, Voltorb, Zapdos and Articuno. I also finished Silph, cleared Saffron Gym, cleared Route 19/20/21, Pokemon Mansion, Cinnabar Gym and most of Viridian Gym(have Gym Leader left) all while training my team up to the following levels: Magneton(51), Butterfree(50), Lapras(48), Sandslash(49), Ninetales(47) and Tauros(44). I have a LONG grind ahead as I still have Alakazam(glitch catch), and Moltres(Victory Road) to catch and either glitch catch(or Buy) Porygon. Doing so will put me at 93/151, hence I got 58 Evolutions to do... Ugh.

I first started the session by flying to Route 6 as with Surf now available I can encounter and catch Psyduck or the last Water type that I need to get. I then fly over to Route 10 and surf down to the Power Plant(rolling over the Pokemaniac there) and catch Voltorb and Zapdos, getting insanely lucky with one Great Ball. I then fly to Pallet Town and surf to Cinnabar to mark it as a Fly Destination and proceed to carry out one Ditto glitch catch after another with Weedle being the first one since I had two Pokemon with the Special stat required. I then did Eevee via Butterfree, Jynx via Tauros(pulled him out of box for it) and Ekans via Lapras after rolling through Pokemon Mansion and Cinnabar Gym and the Fire type trainers therein. Cinnabar Gym does have a Glitch catch in Meowth(5th Trainer or Super Nerd with a level 41 Rapidash).

I then go back to Fuchsia and surf Route 19/20 with Magneton where eventually I get a Special stat of 131 or what I need for Mewtwo. Took 15 Great Balls but I got the Post-Game Legendary. I then go back to Seafoam and do the puzzle to gain access to Articuno where again, 1 Great Ball equals catch(insane luck). I exit the western side and proceed west to Cinnabar, defeating Trainers along the way. Note that if you wanted to glitch catch Tauros, that the Beauty that is near the Platform(with Bird trainer) has a Cloyster that yields the Special stat needed). I also clear Route 21, with no notable Trainers for glitch catches. I then pull Pidgey out of my box who happens to have a Special stat of 11 or what I need for Lickitung. Another Ditto glitch results in yet another catch. Tauros had also managed to get to Special stat of 85 so guess what? Another Ditto glitch for Raichu.

After all of that, I grab what I need to finish things off at Silph, clear Saffron Gym with Magneton, Butterfree and Tauros respectively(Sabrina still scares me.. but I was 8 levels lower than her Ace so maybe that's why), defeat Blaine(Lapras ftw) and clear most of Viridian Gym, including another glitch catch with the Blackbelt Trainer at the top(yields Golem or another Trade Evolution). I still have Giovanni to do but that's not a priority.

As I noted before, all I have left is two to three more catches and a lot of grinding to do. If I had to do this legitimately, it might take me 100+ hours to do(no joke) as Growlithe and Shellder both have to hit level 50 for Flamethrower and Ice Beam respectively. Bellsprout and Oddish have to hit 33 to get their final move as early as possible, Charmander to 38 to get Flamethrower asap and Rhyhorn has to go from level 7 to level 42. Not as bad with Tentacool but it's still a slog with Slow XP. Dratini might be the worst since I have to do level 10 to 55.

If I can get my team to a Special stat of 182-184, I'll shave hours from my grind. Yet I'll do the easy ones first like Weedle, Eevee and Fast XP mons in Jigglypuff and Clefairy. Wish me luck.
