Hmm learning a bit here today before I head off for a week. Every action in Daggerheart requires a player to roll two D12 die. One D12 die corresponds to Hope while the other corresponds to Fear. You roll each die and add the results. For example, I roll an 8(Hope) and 6(Fear) to get a 14. If an action corresponds to a particular Trait(ex: Strength), you apply your Trait modifier to the result(which for my Sorceress would be -1, hence it'd be 13). Given that the Hope die is greater than the Fear die means I rolled a 13 with Hope and hence I gain 1 Hope for my character. A player starts with 2 Hope and can have up to 6 Hope at any given time(which carries over between Sessions). Whether or not I succeed is based on the difficulty of the action. If I succeed, I get a good outcome but if my result fails, the fact that Hope was greater than Fear mitigates the consequences. Now if Fear is greater than Hope, then it'd be 13 with Fear and that can have bigger consequences on a failure roll. The DM uses Fear to enhance DM actions and can have up to 12 Fear during Sessions. Fear carries over like Hope.

As for Hope, Hope is used to carry out particular actions, such as helping an ally, tag team(Hades should like this one), or activating a Hope Feature(unique to that particular Class). Certain spells can cost Hope to activate(like Wall Walk spell in Arcana Domain). Should Hope + Fear die roll the same, you automatically succeed with Hope and deal Critical Damage if its an attack.

There's also Stress, HP and Armor but I haven't exactly gotten into that portion yet. Stress, I would assume, is Physical + Mental exhaustion. HP is just that, our Hit Points and Armor can mitigate incoming damage. The heavier the armor, the more damage marks it can take before having to be repaired. There's also Evasion and other parameters but again, I'll read up on it when I have the time.

Some additional combat information that will likely be pertinent when we go and use that combat app again.

Combat distance is determined by the following metrics: Melee, Very Close, Close, Far, Very Far and Out of Range. Given our Combat grid was 5 feet per square, Melee is within 1 square distance, if not closer. Very Close is 5-10 Feet or 1 to 2 squares. Close is determined to be 10-30 feet or 2-6 squares. Far is 30 to 100 Feet(6 to 20 squares) and must make an Agility roll to safely move into melee range(can move into Close Range w/o the need to do Agility roll). Very Far is 100 to 300 Feet(20 to 60 squares) and must make an Agility roll to safely move into melee range(or move into Close range w/o Agility roll). Out of Range is just that… out of range(beyond 60 squares). DM can dictate how we'll do combat though but just figured I'd mention what I've found so far.

As for Armor, I think I understand it a bit more now. On the Armor page I linked, Armor has Damage thresholds. The first number is for Major Damage and the second number is for Severe Damage. Your Damage threshold is determined by your Armor + Character level. In my case, I have Gambeson Armor which is 5(Major)/11(Severe). Adding on my character level(aka level 1) results in 6/12. If incoming damage is less than Major(aka 6) but greater than Minor(which I haven't figured out yet…), then I take Minor Damage(-1 HP). If its greater than or equal to Major but less than Severe(aka 6 to 11), I lose 2 HP. If its greater than or equal to Severe(12+), you lose 3 HP.

I haven't figured out Minor Damage thresholds or when damage is completely mitigated/ignored yet though.

So based on what I've read, this game isn't turn based combat

It follows the natural flow of the fight and convo, meaning I can now tie rope around my dagger, throw it, impale target, pull dagger back with target, kick target in the face, then finish with an arrogant remark!

    Right?
