In Alola, Pokémon you put in boxes were sent to some islands you couldn't visit, but could check on, upgrade, and even obtain Pokémon from occasionally. You start with one island where Poké Beans, affection-increasing items you can also use to upgrade Poké Pelago, grow on a vine-like tree. You can upgrade the island twice and get it to Lv. 3 where it gives you the highest amount of beans, upgrades requiring having specific amounts of Pokémon in your boxes and trading Poké Beans. There are other islands that aren't available at the start, all of which require upgrades thrice if you count building them as an upgrade. There's one that could hatch eggs for you, there's one where you can send Pokémon to search for treasures like shards and stones, there's one where you can send Pokémon to level up or gain EVs, and one where you grow berries. All of these things, due to not being done by the player, have a timer instead, which can be decreased by up to 50% by putting beans in boxes for your Pokémon.

The islands and their Pokémon are taken care of by Mohn, Lillie and Gladion's amnesiac father they think disappeared completely into an Ultra Wormhole, who remembers nothing of his past life and has started to like eating Poké Beans after an unknown amount of time spent living on the islands.
