Battle cage not stopping damage from opponent’s bench

I have played several froslass decks over the past week and everytime I play battle cage it stops the damage from being placed on my bench but not theirs. However battle cage works for both players. This ends up costing me the game.

Battle cage says it stops damage counter being placed by effects from the opponent's pokemon. A player can still put damage counters on their own pokemon, because they are not their opponent.

Why would you want to basically disable Froslass ability in the first place?
