    Yeah well a lot of Gen 1 players were disappointed to learn that Char didn’t learn Fly in Red/Blue(added in Yellow) and neither did Dragonite but a flightless bird in Dodrio could. Farfetch’d can learn Fly and Cut, hence he makes a solid HM slave but since you trade for him, you could use him despite his stats not being the best because he gets Sword Dance, hence x2 Attack with one use. Gyarados, to my knowledge, still can’t learn Fly but can learn Bounce(I think) and Hurricane. Thing is Gyarados is really subpar in Gens 2&3.

    Interesting...

    Makes sense that Char couldn't learn Fly

    Charizards usually stayed in the ground

    Ash's had to train to learn to fly at one point

    @Lonestar85

    You mentioned defeating Diglett helps with Speed

    What do you mean?

    Do different Pokémon increase different stats?

    Charizard was flying the moment it evolved. As for Farfetch’d, I have to note that the Return TM would be incredibly strong on it(90 attack stat). Hence Swords Dance, Fly, Cut and Return would be straight up nuts. Just wish it’s Speed was better(60 Speed isn’t great compared to Persian 115 and 70 Attack stat). Persian can learn Cut and Flash btw. Personally if I was doing HM’s on your team, Char would get Fly(might as well given it’s the strongest Flying type move it’ll get since Wing Attack is 60 power). My Char move-set would be Dragon Claw(which is Special in Gen 3), Flamethrower, Fly and move of your choice(I’d normally recommend Earthquake but Giovanni gives that TM to you after defeating him in Viridian Gym and should be reserved for Nidoking). Cut would go to Farfetch’d, Strength to Nidoking and Surf to Gyarados or another Water type if you choose to swap him out. Flash could be used by whoever can learn it(Meowth or Drowzee can if memory serves). Rock Smash and Waterfall are post-game HM’s.

    Anyways, good luck.

    Defeating certain Pokémon yield certain EV’s to the victor. Diglett yield 1 Speed EV while Dugtrio doubles it to 2. Pidgey give 1 Speed EV, Pidgeotto give 2 and Pidgeot gives 3. Pikachu gives 2 Speed EV(Raichu gives 3). Caterpie give 1 HP, Weedle 1 Speed, Geodude(which you’ll see a lot on Rock Tunnek) give 1 Defense. Tentacool give 1 Special Defense while Gastly give 1 Special Attack(hence Pokémon tower in Lavender town is a very good place to train Psychic types for their SpA EV’s). Nidoran female give 1 HP while male Nidoran give 1 Attack. Basically look up the various species to find what EV values they give. This only really matters in PvP but in Gen 1, Diglett we’re ideal for farming Speed EV’s and they still are.
