Yeah I had a bunch of heals but the player surviving was the only thing that got me the first time.

the sinnoh roaming legendary that you didn’t catch in a master ball (cresselia still annoys me to this day)

I followed one all around the map for hours and still didn't catch it!
It either escaped or I accidentally killed it!

also, if pmd counts: just about every legendary there. going through a difficult dungeon and then having to battle the legendary (twice in some cases) is perfection.

I have to say Mewtwo. It was the final challenge of the original games, and required you to navigate a cave of high level evolutions to even encounter it... also boulder puzzles.
