Vmax Giratina Attack Failed

I was playing against a psychic deck with Arceus* and used my Giratina's VMAX attack which instantly KO's a pokemon. It would've been for the win but it had no effect whatsoever. What happened?

If they had Arceus and psychic pokemon... was one of those psychic pokemon espeon Vmax?

Espeon Vmax has the ability to protect all of their pokemon with energy from effects of attacks, and Star requiem ko is an effect of an attack.

Another psychic pokemon i've seen paired with Arceus Before is mewtwo V-union, which has an ability that makes it inmune to effects of attacks.
