[Feature Proposal] Battle & Gym Defense Training: A Balanced Dual-Progression System for Pokémon GO
The Pitch:
Introduce a mechanic allowing Pokémon to gradually gain Power-Up Levels through active battling and passive Gym defense. This restores the classic RPG trainer journey while retaining the existing Stardust and Candy economy as an instant fast-track. This framework is specifically designed with strict guardrails to prevent botting, protect Great/Ultra League PvP viability, eliminate couch farming, and preserve Niantic’s endgame monetization.
1. The Core Mechanics: Dual-Path Progression
Instant Power-Up (Current): Stardust and Candy remain available for players who want immediate, on-demand leveling.
Active Battle Training (New): Battling with a Pokémon awards a small amount of "Training EXP" toward its next half-level threshold.
Passive Gym Defense Reserve (New): Defending gyms accumulates Training EXP into a shared "Account Bank" (e.g., a set amount per 10 minutes defended). Players can freely distribute this banked EXP to any eligible Pokémon in their storage.
What this fixes: Direct defender EXP forces players to leave weak Pokémon in gyms to train them. A banked reserve allows players to deploy proper, high-HP defenders (Blissey, Snorlax) to hold territory while funneling the earned EXP to a baby Pokémon, newly caught Legendary, or raid attacker.
2. Essential Guardrails & Exploit Prevention
To ensure this system cannot be abused or break existing game loops, the following restrictions are implemented:
PvP Protection via "CP Lock": An on/off toggle (or a "Lock CP for Battle League" button) is added to each Pokémon’s profile. When locked, that Pokémon cannot receive battle EXP or banked defense EXP, safeguarding competitive Great League (1,500 CP) and Ultra League (2,500 CP) rosters against accidental level-ups that would permanently ruin them.
The Level 30 Soft Cap: Battle and Gym training only applies up to Level 30.
What this fixes: The primary endgame economy relies on the Level 40 to 50 Candy XL grind. Capping battle gains at Level 30 provides casual players a viable baseline raid counter while leaving the demand for Raid Passes, Incubators, and late-game XL grinding completely intact.
Daily Battle & Defense Ceilings: A strict daily cap is placed on both earned Battle EXP and Gym Defense EXP per account (mirroring the 50 daily PokéCoins limit). This prevents automated overnight tap-scripts and macro abuse, driving regular daily engagement rather than unattended grinding.
Anti-Surrender Checks (New Addition): To ensure the system remains secure and effort-based, EXP is only awarded upon a definitive, completed win against a Team GO Rocket member, Gym Defender, or Raid Boss. Players cannot start a battle and immediately surrender just to farm a daily interaction.
3. Real-World Exploration: Anti-Couch Farming & Gym Circuits
Strictly On-Location Play: Zero EXP is awarded for remote raids, remote friend challenges, or AI team leader training. EXP is earned entirely from physical, on-location gameplay (in-person Gym battles, in-person Raids, and localized Team GO Rocket stops).
Per-Gym Limit: A strict cap of 1 to 2 EXP-eligible battles per unique Gym per day.
What this fixes: Players cannot sit on their home or office gym and farm infinite EXP. To reach their daily training cap, players are forced to step outside and walk an active neighborhood circuit across multiple unique Gyms and PokéStops.
4. Ecosystem Benefits & Revival of the Gym Meta
This system will help to give players a more authentic Gym and battling experience, rewarding battle mastery instead of just collecting Pokémon in-game for a showcase. Right now, not many players give importance to battling outside of the GO Battle League, and gyms often stagnate for days once a player secures their daily 50 coins.
By tying both offensive battles and defensive stations to unique physical locations, this mechanic directly reinforces Niantic's core mission of outdoor exploration. Taking a newly caught Level 1 favorite, mapping out a walking route, and actively training it up to a battle-ready teammate restores the classic Pokémon journey that raw candy-grinding fails to capture.

Ok good effort... but was that The Pitch or The Bible?
