How did pokemon become the way it is now?
this might be a stupid question but how did pokemon start so little and all of the sudden BOOM! fast forward thirty year later you cant even find a single pack in walmart.
what do yall think?

Like every giant success it ultimately comes down to luck... regardless of any philosophy on success they try to justify.
But after that initial stroke of luck, they did a brilliant job expanding the franchise to the point where they don't even need to innovate anymore… they just pump out content and it's a guaranteed hit because it's Pokemon.
Take Pokemon GO as an example... augmented reality games wasn't a new idea, but putting Pokemon in it changed everything. The same goes for recent main games… no real breakthroughs, they just follow existing trends (sometimes quite late), but it's almost always a massive success anyway.
As for Walmart you're right... cards became less of a hobby and more of a big side business... the hype created a massive resale market, which is why shelves get empty so fast.

Hmmm... years of personal experience, knowing a few entrepreneurs, following the Pokemon franchise closely and paying attention to how different businesses operate (from small startups to giant corporations).

Likely just luck as @DoubleCure said. Once they entered the market, they got so big that they can just kinda float on their title as being the largest franchise in the world, so similar to Disney, they can just bank on the fans' obsession with the franchise.
