What do you think of Roy's character and team from Pokemon Horizons-Mega Voltage? (Spoilers!)
Roy's team's sparked controversy ever since him receiving a (shiny) Mega Lucario, and Friede's Pikachu—making him getting called an Ash clone, and Roy not utilizing Kilowattrel as much since.
Furthermore, the fact that his Lucario has two different Mega Forms led to him being called a Mary Sue, along with eventually catching a (shiny) Mega Raquaza. Do you think the outcome of Roy's team shafted or put a dent into his character overall?
Or what do you just think of him as a character?
(This isn't a hate post, you're free to enjoy the character you like or criticize!)

Given that the English dub hasn't gotten to the end of Season 3 yet, much less the Z-A 4th Season, I can't really comment much other than it's refreshing to see the flow of Time exist in the Pokemon world. I mean Ash was on the scene for 25 seasons and you're going to tell me with a straight face that he's still 10? That no amount of "time" transpired between his Indigo start to the point he becomes Alolan champion, much less World Champion? Yeah, so plausible. If you want to rip the anime, rip the flow of Time being inconsistent(a year had passed when they get back to Viridian) or non-existent(forever 10).
With Roy, a year transpired where he developed his bond with his starter(ultimately becomes Skeledirge), obtained a Lucario(the fact it's shiny is probably what triggers people) and worked on the bond to strengthen Mega Evolution. Thing is Roy isn't the first character with a shiny. Did people forget Ash had a shiny Noctowl? Yeah thought so. It's not like Roy never had any setbacks because he got his butt kicked several times over. Ash did too but generally in the League Tournaments or by Paul(best rival).
Roy getting Captain Pikachu would be alright for me if Friede had died. The fact he hasn't and is now back as of the English dub should revert custody and I agree that he doesn't use Kilowattrel enough. Granted that's why Ash never had another Electric type because of Golden boy. Got to sell that merch.
Same deal with Lucario-Z and Mega Rayquaza because afaik, the mega hadn't been shown in the Anime until now. I wouldn't call him a Mary Sue but I do feel they're giving him too much focus. Liko, to me, should get the development but maybe I'm just pushing for a female lead to get the opportunity to shine as opposed to playing second fiddle like they have for the past 25+ years.

First off, I really like your response. But from what I heard, the reason why fans disliked Roy's Lucario is due to the fact that Mega Lucario was an overused Mega Evolution—we don't get much focus on other Mega's in the anime. Also, his Lucario has no distinct personality that separated him from any other, unlike Cameron's (unfortunately).
We don't get to appreciate the bond between the two, due to them having zero bond building other than the Lumiose City Arc, and it would have been more satisfying to witness it real time.
Secondly, I agree the flow of time being present and consistent is one of the best things the anime did. Also, Liko objectively did get more screen time and episodes compared to Roy and Dot in the beginning, but even with that in mind, I do agree he should share an equal amount of screen time with Liko instead of all of it as to not make Roy seem like the primary main character.
Overall, I loved hearing your explanation.
