The epic quest we are on is a complex one that I'm too tired to explain so if you join you can learn along the way

I think you got it all with one minor caveat. Only sadistic GM's want you to fail. A GM wants you to be the story and, if possible, succeed. There's no story if the characters die by level 2-3 because the GM.made it their mission to kill you. That's not a story, that's murder lol.
