Possible bug: Punk Helmet did not place damage counters after Claydol’s Devolution Ray KO
Hi all, has anyone else seen this interaction?
I had Golbat as my Active Pokémon with Punk Helmet attached. Golbat already had 20 damage on it.
My opponent attacked with Claydol’s Devolution Ray, which did damage and devolved my Golbat into Zubat. Because Zubat had lower HP, it was Knocked Out after the devolution.
However, Punk Helmet did not place the 4 damage counters on the attacking Claydol.
From my understanding, Punk Helmet says that if the Pokémon this card is attached to is in the Active Spot and is damaged by an attack from the opponent’s Pokémon, put 4 damage counters on the Attacking Pokémon.
Since Golbat was damaged by Claydol’s attack while Punk Helmet was attached, I expected Punk Helmet to trigger, even though the Pokémon was then devolved and Knocked Out afterward.
Is this a bug, or is there a ruling where the Tool no longer applies because the Pokémon devolved before the Tool effect resolved?
Would appreciate if anyone has had the same issue or can confirm the correct interaction.

Not a bug... Punk Helmet fails to trigger due to how Devolution mechanics remove the original card from play.
By the official rules this is how the attack resolution works:
- Step 1 (damage): Claydol's attack damage is placed on Golbat.
- Step 2 (attack effects): Claydol's Devolution Ray effect resolves immediately, devolving Golbat. The Golbat card is removed from the field and sent back to your hand.
- Step 3 (trigger check): The attack ends, and the game checks for "after attack" effects like Punk Helmet.
Because the Golbat card was removed from the board in Step 2, its attachment to Punk Helmet was broken before the game reached Step 3. The Punk Helmet checks for the specific card that took the damage, but since that Golbat card is already in your hand, Punk Helmet loses its target and its effect fails right before the Knock Out check.
