2026 Quality Improvements in Pokémon Trading Card Game Live
Hello Trainers!
As we near our 3rd Anniversary, we are continuing to reinvest in our future as we hear from you the increasing role Pokémon TCG Live is playing as both an introduction to the Pokémon Trading Card Game and a competitive training ground for players engaged with Play! Pokémon events. When we ask community members what’s most important for us to focus on, there is one thing we hear clearly: the bugs. In this Developer Letter, we’d like to walk you through how we’re approaching our focus on quality this year, and a concrete improvement that just landed in today's Version 1.37.0 release in Pokémon TCG Live.
Background
We take the honor and responsibility of representing the physical Pokémon Trading Card Game in digital form very seriously. As the physical Pokémon Trading Card Game grows, so does the complexity of our digital ruleset, and that can sometimes introduce bugs we don't find prior to launch. This is especially true for big sets or complex feature launches. Sometimes these elusive bugs can be easy to overlook in favor of new features without intention to slow down and look deeply, but it’s your feedback and support from internal leadership that’s allowing us to do just that.
We have a list of issues we’re tracking down this year, but when bug hunting the challenge is that you may not know how big a problem is until you’ve figured out exactly what the problem is. Some issues are still under ongoing investigation, and these include more recent emergent issues we know are being discussed within the community. If you have more information that you think can help us reliably reproduce an issue you're seeing, we invite you to submit a Support Ticket to aid in our continued investigations.
A Breakthrough for this Release: Search Reliability
One report we’ve heard frequently is a card selection bug during search operations. When engaging in a deck search action, some players reported that they were unable to select specific cards, and in some cases this would lead to a change in match outcomes. This was especially challenging for players and for quality assurance (QA) because it was not predictable behavior.
After some deep investigation, an engineer on our team was able to identify the issue that was causing the search bug. In this case, this collision and state-dependent issue only cropped up on repeat play, so dedicated players saw the issue but clearly identifying steps to reproduce it took lengthier than normal play sessions in QA.
We believe we have addressed the “card unselectable during search action” bug in the Version 1.37.0 release. We are bringing this to your attention so that you can check for yourself, and report back to our Support Team if there are still issues in that interaction or unintended consequences of the fix that we should address.
Looking Ahead
Our quality roadmap still contains a long list of issues, including those pertaining to card loading and match stability. These are complex problems, and if not fixed carefully could just introduce other unintended problems. We are looking into them with the attention they deserve, and will continue to monitor community sentiment through our Support and Community teams for any news of emergent issues we don't catch in pre-release quality assurance. We are also continuing to look for ways to improve our pre-release processes – there are many paths to improved quality, and we are pursuing all of them.
The Pokémon TCG Live team is excited to celebrate three years of play with you in June! We look forward to our continued conversations with the community, even when it's about challenging topics like emergent gameplay issues. We’re here for the long haul, and we’re invested in your long term gaming experience. That also means we’re still working on new features: you can expect continued improvements to your gameplay experience over the course of the year. Train On!
