Shaymin's interaction with Dragapult

Some context:

Shaymin(010/182 DRI) has a ability that prevents all damage done to benched pokemon that don't have a rule box by attacks from your opponents pokemon(Pokemon EX, Pokemon V, etc have rule boxes)

The issue is that Dragapult EX(160/217 ASC) Phantom drive does 200 damage to the opposing pokemon then allows you to put 6 damage counters on benched pokemon.

The question is, if I have Shaymin in play on the bench with that ability shouldn't dragapult only be able to put damage counters ONLY on pokemon with rule boxes? I just had a game where the Dragapult was able to attach 6 damage counters to my Shaymin thus losing the game.

Call me salty but the way the cards read that interaction should not have happened or am I crazy.

what your misreading is shaymin stops attacks to benched Pokemon, dragapults attack is the 200 to the active and then it places damage counters the counters are not classified as “an attack” so shaymin is useless against it

Yeah...I think you're right. I looked at both cards. I'm a newbie, though, so maybe someone who knows more will come along.

Dragapult ex puts 6 damage counters on the opponent's bench. Placing damage counters is considered an effect of an attack, not direct attack damage... since Shaymin only protects the bench from direct damage from attacks, the damage counters go through its protection
