Is it just me or is the penalty system suddenly overactive?

i’ve gotten like three penalties for idling today, and i don’t really idle in games. like i don’t rage quit and just put the game down, idk why i would have gotten these penalties. like am i being punished for helping the team set up for objectives or something?????

You can get a penalty for 1-2 minutes of idling of any kind, not just ragequitting. So if you for any reason are called away from the game to pick it back up a minute later, then you might still get a penalty. I don't know how the matches in question went, nor have I seen any replays, but that is how the system works. If this doesn't apply to you, then best to contact support.

yeah idk they just said i was idling short term in a game i just had, and i was not called away i did not purposely idle for any reason other than objective setup or like if all my allies are dead i’ll just stand around waiting for them to respawn because i play support, specifically comfey, so i don’t usually farm when there’s no objectives up. like idk why im getting punished for that.

i was using ragequitting as an example, like some people will put their controller down or something. idk why i would be punished for idling because i play support, usually comfey. the only reason i could imagine waiting around this long NOT on purpose is that i escaped a team fight alive and all my allies are dead, so obviously im not going to start farming, or keep fighting the entire team by myself, i might back and then just stand there. i just got ANOTHER penalty for,,,,,,not sure what reason again lol. i had the game in my hands the whole time. truly i do not know why im getting idling penalties.

"Just standing there" is idling by definition, regardless of whether you have the game in your hands or not. If in doubt, I actually would suggest farming just to be on the safe side. One of the tips I have received for playing Unite when I started out is "never do nothing." Even if you have to move around, just make sure that nothing you do can be "mistaken" for idling.

Whenever I hide in the grass waiting for the next objective or stand on the launch pad defending after we made post-RayQ/Groudon goals, I always shift back and forth or twirl to make sure I’m not dinged for “idling”.
