a few basic battle tips I can give you

have tools to use: a simple bravery charm can turn a low health basic pokemon into an extra tanky staller or make your choice pokemon extra hard to deal with

make note of retreat costs: switching pokemon can make or break a battle…using pokemon like latias ex to remove that retreat cost will allow you to bring back a near koed pokemon and put out a full strength pokemon for free or use the trainer card "switch" to do the same. No point in keeping a pokemon in the battle if they only have 10 hp

weakness and resistance: these are big. if a pokemon has a weakness…case in point dark terra charizard has a weakness to grass type energy. Hitting that charizard with a grass type move will increase the damage, doubling it…ie a 40 damage grass attack will deal 80 damage instead to the charizard due to his weakness to grass types

resistance on the other hand is when a pokemon will resist damage from a certain type…again, case in point…team Rocket's Mewtwo has a resistance to fighting type energy, this reduces attacks with that energy by 30…if the mewtwo is hit by a fighting type attack, that attack will deal 30 less damage

next up are abilities: these are passive things that certain pokemon can have like Chien-pao's shivery chill lets it draw two water energies for free each turn or the new Jellicent Ex's oceanic curse that blocks all opposing item or tool use. Make note of any abilities a pokemon you or your opponent may have

next up are status ailments: Poison…confusion…paralysis…sleep…and burns. Any pokemon can be afflicted with one of these ailments and it's always a bad situation when it happens. Paralysis keeps the pokemon from doing anything, requiring a successful coin flip to break free of the paralysis or just waiting a single turn…sleep is similar but you get more coin flip chances to wake up.

Poison and burns cause damage every turn with burns being both a bit forgiving and bit awful. Poison deals 10 damage every turn and can only be healed through special conditions where as Burns deal 20 damage per turn but you can heal the burn via a successful coin flip

Confusion is just as annoying in the tcg as it is in the video games. If your pokemon is confused, you have to flip a coin to try to attack. If heads, you succeed and the attack happens as normal, if you flip tails…your pokemon hits itself in its confusion, taking 30 damage

All the status ailments are annoying to deal with but can be dealt with simply by evolving or switching pokemon, either method cures the ailment instantly

finally energies themselves…some attacks are energy hungry, costing 2…3…or even 4 energies for a single attack. Make a mental note of which pokemon will be your key attackers and make sure to fill the required energy in to make the most out of those pokemon

All in all, it comes down to the strategy you build your pokemon around and the type of energy you wish to use
