Pokémon Colosseum games coming to Switch Online

Nintendo Switch Online will be getting Gamecube games, and the Pokémon Colosseum games will be included.

I assume they won't have Pokémon Home compatibility much like the Pokémon Stadium games on the N64 didn't, but at least there is a self contained single player RPG attached to these titles, and you are barred from transferring Pokémon for the entire game in the originals anyway.

What do you think of these games? Have you played them before, or will this be your first opportunity.

I liked the novelty of playing a 3D Pokémon RPG on a home console, as diminished as the experience was. I believe they deliberately padded out the game and prevented trading until the very end to dissuade people from renting the game only to get the exclusive Pokémon.

The whole thing might be too dated and almost entirely redundant now, given that the main series is on a home console and in 3D. But if you have never played them before, I would be interested to hear what you think.

I'm going to play them as I've never owned a Gamecube, I do kind of wish they added a functionality with home as it's not like you're unfairly getting the Pokémon, you're still playing the actual game. I suppose it's because the whole NSO Classics are just an elaborate, official emulator, but even then, some emulators out there (Don't know which, I don't emulate) have got systems to make Pokémon from the emulated games be compatible with official game, so it could probably be done. But, yeah, I'll play them (When I, eventually, get a Switch 2).

I wasn't actually clear on whether the Gamecube games were Switch 2 exclusive, or if the original Switch will be able to play them too.

The fact that they were part of the Switch 2 showcase suggests to former, but I see no technical reason why the Switch 1 couldn't play Gamecube games.

[Edit: Oh, I just checked the website. Gamecube games are S2 only. Ahh, well, I own all the Gamecube games I want already. The only potential benefit is the ability to play the multiplayer online.]

Anyway, Game Freak can't be bothered to make their new main series games compatible with Home at launch. And again, they never made the Stadium games Home compatible, even though they arguably need it much more than Colosseum and Gale of Darkness. I don't expect them to make these games compatible.

I think there is an outside chance they could do it if the GBA games also make it to NSO, but I still deem it very unlikely.

i'm assuming they won't be compatible with the new games or with Home. So I'm taking this with a grain of salt. I'd rather have a new game with that compatibility.

Yeah, I'd be surprised if you could transfer from them. I mean- I want to hope you can, but I doubt it. I do think it's quite a different situation, though, compared to Stadium, and a much different process. Stadium games were reading your carts and allowing you basically digital copies of those Pokemon, I think, except for Stadium 2, which had a trading function built in if I'm not mistaken? Or some sort of box system?

Regardless, they're very different. In the Stadium games, you're not going around catching new Pokemon. Collesseum was created to help with the transition from GB to GBA since Pokemon from GB couldn't come over to GBA. But I digress, I mean- again I hope you can I don't see a reason it couldn't be implemented via home I mean- the games in terms of code and boxes isn't any more complicated even if emulation, Home just needs to be able to read the save data and locate the box data and what's inside it. Obviously there'd still need to be some work involved, but I don't know if Gamefreak will allow it. I mean- they allowed you to transfer Pokemon from the digital versions of the GB games to Pokemon Bank, and that was basically the same situation as this.

Personally, without a transfer function, I don't see much of a point in investing the time in playing them. Like- they're fun enough games when I was a kid, but- it's not like the story is something like Black and White, you know? Like BLKWHT and BLKWHT2, even without being able to transfer from them nowadays, the stories are really good and interesting. I just don't know that the Collosseum games are. And like even then it's almost just the principle of it at that point, there's no reason they can't implement the feature so electing not to is like, "well okay then I don't care to play it because you're not rewarding my investment like you do with the other Pokemon games." But that's just me.

What I've liked about the Switch era of Pokemon is 1) just how many Pokemon games we've gotten and 2) that you can transfer from each one even if they differ a bit in gameplay style like with Let's Go and Arceus I view these two games not any different so again to not be able to transfer from them just because "they're emulation" is a middle finger, because so were the GB versions they released on 3DS.
