seriously considering quitting over this, it would be steep at 1/5th the price

That's exactly why I'm so fired up about this.
I love this game and have dedicated a (probably unhealthy) large amount of time into it.
But the whole time I've played we had the promise that I would be able to trade cards with my friends. If trading was never going to be a feature, I wouldn't still be playing. And I don't think their trading system is better than no trading system at all.
