To answer the question, Clavell's team is not version specific. To start, he has the starter that beats yours. Meaning if you took Fuecoco, he has Quaxly's final form. His Water alternative is Gyarados, so if he has a different starter, then it's highly recommended you have an Electric type(or Ice type w/ Freeze Dry) due to its x4 vulnerability or something that can Paralyze or put it to Sleep to give you time to take it out since Gyarados can sweep your entire team with Waterfall + Dragon Dance. His Grass alternative is Amoongus, which a good Fire or Psychic type can dispatch with relative ease(just avoid contact moves) while his Fire alternative is Houndoom(strong Water, Rock or Ground can dispatch it). The rest of his team remains the same in Poltageist(pure Ghost type, recommend Physical Dark/Ghost Attacks but note its ability), Abomasnow(sets Hail/Snow when entering, x4 Fire vulnerability) and Oranguru(Normal/Psychic type, Dark dispatches it quickly).

Given that composition, build your team accordingly. Here's a possible team I did on the fly: Meowscarada(Grass/Dark), Gyarados(Water/Flying), Armarouge(Fire/Psychic), Clodsire(Ground/Poison), Annihilape(Fighting/Ghost) and Jolteon(Electric). Your starter can sweep half his team(Oranguru, Poltageist and Skeledirge due to you outspeeding it). Then Jolteon quickly removes Gyarados while Armarouge takes down Amoongus and Abomasnow. Rest of your team is there to aid as needed.
