FIshermen Pokeballs

In the games (at least BDSP), the fishermen class are shown sending out their Pokemon by casting their pole as if they were fishing. What I'm wondering is how that works. Does the ball stay on the line after the Pokemon comes out (but the game doesn't show it)? Does it break off and come back to the trainer? And what would the Pokeball look on the inside if they're able to attach a fishing line to it? Let me know your theories.

My two theories is that there's either a very small hole on the top of the Pokeball that the trainer can feed a fishing line through and tie on the other end (the inside) to keep it attached, or that there's basically the same thing going on, but where you'd tie the knot there'd be slits that with enough pressure would allow the ball to pop off of the line and send the Pokemon out.
