Dracozolt VMAX vs shadowrider calyrex v

I'm still fairly new to playing Pokemon. Tonight I had a game where I was up against dracozolt VMAX, using shadowrider calyrex v. Calyrex has an attack that places 5 damage counters as an effect, would this bypass the counter of dracozolt's spark trap, that does 120 damage if damaged by an opponents attack?

Yes, that bypasses the ability. Calyrex's attack "places damage counters", this is a different mechanic from damage done by an attack. It's the same reason Inteleon's Quick Shooting ability can bypass Manaphy's bench protection ability.
