I would say that one of the other champions is better but I haven't played enough old games to know.

It is not a remake or sequel. I think calling it an alternate universe of RGBY is more accurate.

It takes place in the Mega timeline (Mega Evolution and a younger version of a character from Alola appear), and in it Red never even fought Giovanni and Team Rocket still exists. But Red and Blue are in the game and they fought the league and became champions years before your journey starts, before Oak even made the Pokédex. Apart from that it's basically a remake of Pokémon Yellow but with the rival and protagonist changed. Sorry if this is hard to understand, I don't know how to explain it.
