Why does Manaphy not protect my bench from Dragapult ex?

As the subject says, Manaphy didn't protect my bench. I have a screenshot but don't see an option to attach here.

    Because Manaphy does not protect against damage counters and never did.

    There is a previous discussion on this exact topic. Dragapult says it places damage counters. manaphy prevents damage done. Complicated wording.
