Do fainting Pokemon in Pokemon Go shrink because they faint or because of returning?

The animation for a Pokemon fainting and being returned happens almost, then if not at the same time, so it's hard for me to tell if the Pokemon faints, starts shrinking and then is returned, or if it starts to faint and then shrinks AS it's being returned.

    I think the returning animations and the catching animations are the same expect you can’t see the pokeball when return
