They never really looked that great to begin with. I had hoped we'd get more physical customisation options somewhere down the line, but that wouldn't sell paid cosmetics to cover up the defaults.
Niantic, as a Google adjacent company, likely favours Silicon Valley's predilection for DEI initiatives, and Japan, being a decade or two behind western trends, has had a recent spate of Japanese companies adopting these ideologies in a misguided attempt to "appeal to a modern, global audience". At least that is what their localisation staff tell them, anyway.

OMG, is this what made mine look like a woman?
All the old posts I could find suggested I could change the gender and now I logged out of the game and can’t get back in?
I have had the game since it started and although I often only play to run my battery down I have put a lot of time and effort into it and also don’t appreciate having stuff like this changed without notice.
