I don't really see why not, or care if there is a competitive mode, just keep the FOMO/incentives/rewards away. I have no interest in grinding a game mode competitively that I dont care about.

Agee 100%. Pocket is advertised as more of a casual collecting game. The primary reason I am playing this game is 1)Battles are not incentivized, 2)The game respects my time, (twice daily a pack of cards to open) without limitations/obligations/goals/objectives/missions.

What do you mean? The game is designed to collect cards, they want you to login daily. So you can login daily to collect cards, that is the game. I wont be playing a lot, so I appreciate the, twice per day login to collect cards and not much "fomo" outside of that.
