Currently has a 96 on Metacritic, which is phenomenal given that it's based on 80+ reviews. OoT's original 99 only had like 22 if memory serves and was revolutionary when it came out. The 3DS version has a 94 so they effectively improved upon it and I honestly don't see how anyone can say this shouldn't win GoY(again). You do need a Switch 2 but if you ever needed a reason to get one(outside of Pokémon Gen 10 next year), then honestly you ought to get one, preferably with the model that can replace the internal battery(mine cannot be replaced afaik so when it goes bad, it's relegated to the Dock/Ac adapter permanently).

GTA6 isn't for all ages and OoT wasn't hyped to death over years. In fact most Zelda fans didn't really know if this was coming until earlier this year. The graphical update is beyond exquisite but the QoL changes(Sprint!), voice acting(original never had) just give it the hands down choice for GoY. I haven't even seen the updated OST for it yet but I'm sure people are uploading it soon on YT and other platforms.

Ironic that I said suitable for all ages and yet I forget about this nightmare fuel. Got to admit they did a great job here.

Yeah Oot has less of an expectation, maybe there should be a post or thread for game of the year predictions

I don't really know if any other game that has come out in 2026 that would warrant consideration for GoY. Avatar Legends might be worth mentioning for a Fighting game category given the detail behind it for the characters. I even recall highlighting it awhile back.

Available on multiple platforms, including the Switch.

Journalist reviews, Metacritic scores and award shows are largely meaningless. They are more popularity contests or ways to reward industry friends than a true reflection of quality. If anything I take high scores to be more likely a condemnation of a game than praise. "This game ticked all the boring industry boxes that are expected from the homogenised AAA space. 10/10".

Ocarina of Time was a very special game to me growing up. It was the first time a 3D game world actually made sense to me. I preferred Majora's Mask, but for a time I would play both at least annually, first on my N64, then on my Gamecube. I do not think they were the Greatest Games of All Time™ that many hold them to be, but nevertheless they were massively influential and very ambitious for their time, in addition to simply being enjoyable gaming experiences in their own right.

So I am very sceptical of any attempt to remaster them. Such a remake would likely miss the point, either modernising the game to the point that it becomes an entirely different experience (and in the modern climate, a simplified, less compelling one, trading gameplay and complexity for set pieces), or adhere too strictly to the original to the point that it becomes redundant. The same game with "prettier" graphics.

It doesn't help that I consider this remake visually ugly, but maybe it looks a lot better when played on a big screen (or small Switch screen) rather than a YouTube trailer.

I am open to the possibility that this is a quality remake. Perhaps it does refine, modernise and expand the original without losing any of the quality, complexity or charm, but there is so much room to muck it up I am reluctant to even try.

At any rate, I do not own a Switch 2 and I am not going to run out and buy one for this game. Maybe if it gets a few more titles that interest me. Maybe if a friend lets me try it on their console and my fears are assuaged. Or maybe Winds and Waves won't be terrible and I can pick it up alongside it.
