Don't Judge a Deck By Its Format!
Many users seem to dismiss expanded format as a thing of the past, and focus exclusively on standard format. I understand the appeal of new strategies and new cards etc.
But I think expanded format doesn't get anywhere near the level of recognition it deserves! You can do really interesting things with it, and in my opinion, expanded games are far more interesting to play because of the wider variety of decks you're likely to be playing against.
Anyway, I present a challenge to you all. If you haven't played Expanded Format already, try it! See what interesting strategies you can make and share them with us here!
Because expanded format has so many more cards than standard, here's my suggested guidelines for comments on this post:
Rather than posting a decklist of your favorite expanded format deck, line out your ideal setup and the strategy involved.
Example:
My favorite expanded format deck is a Castform deck. There's a series of Castforms from Chilling Reign that have an interesting ability: if you have 8 or more Stadium cards in your discard pile, their attacks cost nothing.
Normal-type Castform has a 3-energy attack that lets you draw cards until you have 6 in your hand, doing 80 damage in the process.
Fire-type Sunny Castform has a 3-energy attack that does 150 damage, and discards a Stadium in play.
Water-type Rainy Castform has a 2-energy attack that does 20 damage to each of your opponent's Pokémon in play (terrible for Munkidori decks, I know, but great for picking off low-HP Basic Pokémon on your opponent's Bench).
Water-type Snowy Castform has a 3-energy attack that does 120 damage, but that Castform can't attack next turn. Each Castform has a retreat cost of 0, meaning that this attack has no real drawback.
Aside from the Castforms, my deck is largely composed of Stadium cards and a wide variety of Supporter cards that allow you to discard many, many cards, such as Professor's Research or Raifort from more recent expansions, or Allister from Vivid Voltage (draw three cards, then discard from 1-3 cards from your hand).
I also include a Genesect whose ability keeps your opponent from playing Ace Spec cards as long as it has a tool attached, Raticate that let you search your deck for as many cards as you have Benched Pokémon (2-colorless-energy cost handled by Reversal Energy or Lucky Energy), and Camping Gear, which lets me search for a card and put it into my hand, ending my turn (great in the beginning when I'm still discarding Stadiums).
This deck usually takes somewhere from 3-5 turns to discard 8 Stadiums. In that time, I'll usually lose a couple Castforms, but that just allows Reversal Energy to cover the Energy cost of any attack in the deck. Overpowered attacks are wasted on the 70 HP Castforms, and any fallen Castform is easily replaced with no build-up time.
It's a surprisingly effective deck, made even more so with Boss' Orders, Xerosic's Machinations, and that Genesect, all of which mess with my opponent's setup.
All I need now is one copy of Manaphy from Brilliant Stars to prevent damage to my Benched Castforms!
(this is an IRL deck, btw, don't think I said that earlier)
Anyway, looking forward to any decks you guys post!

Expanded can be fun and interesting, but we also have to admit that competitively speaking it's completely broken.
I mean, consistent donk decks, control decks that lock the opponent in the first couple of turns, wiping out several Pokemon no matter how much HP they have... and so on.
I used to really like Expanded and even Legacy or Theme formats... unfortunately nobody plays them anymore IRL... not even TCG Live supports them.

The "specific tab for Expanded" in TCG Live isn't the actual Expanded format... where have you been living? lol that's one of the biggest complaints about the game... with hundreds of posts just in this forum alone.
The current "unfinished Expanded" in TCG Live is an incomplete format that they haven't finished implementing yet... maybe read this:
TCG Live does not currently support all Expanded-format cards
In 2026 - The Expanded format will remain unchanged
The official Expanded format includes all cards from the Black & White era (2011) onward... however TCG Live today only supports cards from the Sun & Moon era (2017) onward for matches...
Cards from the Black & White and XY eras haven't been fully programmed into the game yet... because of this what we have in the game right now is actually missing core cards, as well as epic and classic decks from the actual Expanded format.

Well, I don't see any reason to complain. Expanded format is mostly fun because of the unexpected strategies you can create with cards that weren't meant to be combined. I play Expanded IRL because the standard format cards are too expensive and I happen to have a ton of cards from two to three years ago.
Besides, TPC has a lot on their plate! I'm sure they'll finish adding the really old cards eventually, but in the meantime, why complain that a free app that generates no revenue on its own isn't the best it could possibly be?
(Also, you never said what your favorite Expanded format deck was! Care to share? 🤞)

The cards are in the game, but they aren't programmed for be playable in matches yet.
Players aren't complaining about unfinished Expanded because they love to complain... it's mostly because they initially announced that finishing the Expanded format was a priority and they even set an expected date. After all these years it's basically still in the same state as it was during the beta phase... and instead of keeping their promise they implemented new game modes.

This is such a refreshing take! Expanded format really does open up a whole world of creativity that standard just can’t match. The sheer number of card combos, tech options, and wild strategies is what makes it so fun and unpredictable :D
Toolbox decks like Zoroark-GX are a great example. They use versatile attackers and draw engines to adapt to any matchup. If you haven’t tried expanded, give it a shot, there’s so much room for unique setups and fun surprises!0
