Journal Entry#7: School of Hard Knocks

Currently have a Time stamp of 5 Hours and 28 Minutes so a relatively short session again. After spending some time grinding to level 22 and having Sandshrew evolve, I make my way South to Route 6. To get there requires taking the Underground path since the Guard won't let you go into Saffron City for whatever reason. Inside near the entrance is where you can trade Cubone(if you caught one like I did) for Machoke(which will evolve into Machamp). I won't trade it at this time but will do so eventually. Inside the path are a couple hidden items with a Full Restore being the prize as you can sell it for 1500 Poke/Yen or keep it if you'd like.

Anyways, Route 6 has six Trainers(coincidence?) and four of the six can be used for glitch catches. The two that can't are facing one another and were changed from Red/Blue to mirror the trainers from the School of Hard Knocks Episode. Male trainer has a Weepinbel that Misty crushes after he insults her Water Type Gym while the Female trainer has the Cubone that Pikachu faces. Deal with them as you see fit but do so after doing the glitch catches(they don't go anywhere).

Now the four glitch catches are Grimer, Chansey, Rhyhorn and Shellder. All four can be obtained later in the game but getting them now gives you the opportunity to use them on your team provided you take the time to train them up. Do note that Rhyhorn and Shellder are both Slow XP Pokemon so they take a lot of XP to level up. Shellder will benefit from the Bubblebeam TM(or Water Gun if you have it) since it won't learn a water move until level 23 and it's Clamp a Wrap-like Trap move that deals Water type damage. Rhyhorn won't learn anything until level 30 so get used to Horn Attack.

Grimer can be obtained at the Power Plant or Cinnabar Island but getting him this early means you can use a Poison Type if you really wanted to. Just be aware it will only know Pound for attacks until level 37 when it finally learns Sludge and evolves at 38. Grimer is spawned by the Bug Trainer who is coincidentally a Long Distance Trainer that you'll encounter first on the route. Use w/e Pokemon you want against him.

Chansey is spawned by the next Bug Trainer who has a level 20 Butterfree. He has three status moves(Poisonpowder/Stun Spore/Sleep Powder) and Supersonic so he's more of an annoyance than a difficult opponent(Red/Blue players have to deal with Confusion so they nerfed this trainer in Yellow). Chansey is found in the Safari Zone and is notoriously difficult to get there. Yet in this wild battle, it won't run and can be caught with a single Poke Ball so this Bug Trainer is really important here.

The next two trainers, a Lass and Jr Trainer, spawn Rhyhorn and Shellder respectively. Lass has three Pidgey(Pikachu) while Jr Trainer has Spearow + Raticate(Pikachu can beat both, just watch the Hyper Fang). Rhyhorn is another Safari Zone Pokemon so any Pokemon you can catch here is one less you need to get in the Safari Zone the hard way. Shellder can be fished on Cycling Road with a Super Rod so getting it here can permit you to use it at Rock Tunnel against all the Rock Types.

After arriving in Vermilion, I grabbed the Bike Voucher from the Fanclub Chairman and will be redeeming it in next Session as I explore Route 11 and S.S. Anne along with more Glitch catches. You'll be surprised at what you can get here.

    Journal Entry#8: Glitch Ahoy!

After arriving in Vermilion, I head East, past the Harbor and S.S. Anne to Route 11. Route 11 has a whopping 10 Trainers, of which 5 can be used immediately for Glitch catches. The Pokemon you can obtain via Glitch are Tentacool, Staryu, Onix, Growlithe and Magmar.

Tentacool is obtained much later in the game via Surfing or Fishing Rod but getting it here means you can take advantage of its Speed and great Special that only becomes better when it evolves(just be sure to give it a Water move. It doesn't get Water Gun until level 22). Staryu is another Surf/Fish catch that you get later in the game but lacks a Water move until level 17(perfect Bubblebeam candidate). You could evolve it as soon as you acquire a Water Stone but note it doesn't learn anything as a Starmie so keep it as a Staryu until it learns what you need it to(like Recover at 27 if memory serves). Onix is found in Rock Tunnel or Victory Road so getting it here is a big blessing. Just note that Onix royally sucks given the other options available to you. Then there is Growlithe that is not obtainable until Cinnabar Island or well after it's primary playthrough use in Erika's Grass Gym(Red version can get it on Route 7-8) so getting it here is really nice for Blue and Yellow players. Finally there is Magmar, a Pokemon you cannot get on Yellow version at all. I'll note the trainers as they come up.

In addition to the glitch catches, there is one Pokemon you can catch in the Grass in Drowzee. Coincidentally, you can glitch catch one from a Route 11 trainer but why when you can catch one at a higher level.

As you enter Route 11 you have a Youngster in the Grass ahead of you. He would spawn Gastly, a Ghost type that I prefer to get in Lavender Town where it's closer to its evolution level(and we already have Gengar). He has an Ekans so battle him as you see fit. I then enter the Grass and catch Drowzee(level 19).

To your east are two Youngsters. Save the one to the North(he spawns Shellder with his Zubat) as you'll need him to glitch catch another Pokemon via a trainer in the next journal entry. The one to the South spawns Staryu so glitch fight him with a Ground type or Psychic type as he has a Nidorino(backtrack to Cerulean and tag it's Center for Teleport). Glitch catches on Route 11 are time consuming due to the walking involved(no menu, hence no Bike).

The Gambler to the east of the Nidorino Youngster uses Grass Types and glitch spawns Onix. The path then splits. To the South, it takes you back to the beginning of the route where a Gambler resides that uses Water types and spawns Growlithe. To the North is another Gambler that uses Fire types and doesn't spawn anything of note unless you're a Gen 2 player(Scizor and yes the Missingno if caught and traded to a Gen 2 game would be Scizor).

Going down and then East will take you to a point where you'll have an Engineer to your North. Engineers use Electric Pokemon. He glitch spawns Drowzee but since he can be caught in the Grass here, no point as I see it. Heading East along the path will take you to the other Engineer and he spawns Magmar so incredibly important trainer.

To the North of the 2nd Engineer, the path will take you to the Route 12 gate but there are two Trainers. The first is a Gambler who uses Electric types. He glitch spawns Mr.Mime but you can trade for one and get double XP so there isn't a reason to glitch fight him. Behind him in the Grass is another Youngster whose Raticate will glitch spawn Tentacool. The tree to your right has a hidden Escape Rope and inside the Gate on the 2nd floor is an aide of Professor Oak who will give you an Itemfinder if you have 30 species(which you do).

With Route 11 Trainers out of the way, it's time for S.S. Anne and there are tons of trainers to fight here, including one that glitch spawns a popular Bug Pokemon.

To start, I go down below deck where you'll find Sailors bored out of their mind. None of them(save for one) glitch spawn anything we already haven't faced so Electrocute them with extreme prejudice. The one you might consider is the Sailor in the last cabin on far left who spawns Gyarados but I figure raising a Magikarp is more prudent and time efficient.

Backtracking to the beginning there are 6 rooms on 1st floor. From left to right, Rooms 2, 5 and 6 have trainers and none with Glitch outcomes we haven't seen or care about. Utilize a Ground type(Sandslash) on Rooms 5 and 6 while Pikachu can handle the Lass and Youngster in Room 2(be sure to grab TM08 or Body Slam in Room 2). Pikachu hit level 26 during its Room 2 incursion and now has Thunderbolt. May decide to use him instead of using Magneton(again team is still tentative).

Before heading to the 2nd floor, turn south and grab the Great Ball in the Kitchen. On 2nd Floor, head up to the forward deck by going up again and out to battle two Sailors with Pikachu(or Grass type, your call). Return to the 2nd floor and make the turn towards the second set of cabins. The trainer that is of interest is the Gentleman on the 4th cabin who uses Fire types. His Ponyta glitch spawns a Pinsir, a Bug type found in Safari Zone and was exclusive to Blue version until Yellow version came out. Then there's a few more trainers to deal with before I trigger our next rival fight. He boasts of having 40 of the 151 but we have 37 at this point and could have way more if I put any effort into training and evolving everything we've gotten so far(I even skipped the Magikarp via Salesman on Route 3 so yeah).

Our rival's team is unchanged since the last encounter. He still leads with Spearow, following with Rattata, Sandshrew and Eevee. The consequences of the first two rival fights will become apparent in the next encounter. Anyways, once he's defeated, I grab the Cut HM from the Captain and depart the ship where it sails away, never to be seen again. I save the game with a time stamp of 7 hours and 22 minutes. My plan next session is to level up Butterfree as it's a tad behind its teammates and will highlight one of the better training/grinding spots in RBY(and even FRLG) before handing Lt.Surge the easiest L in the game.

    I've been misunderstanding!

Have you glitch summoned all the Pokemon you can?

I glitch summon what I can for three reasons. 1) The Pokemon I glitch spawn are generally rare(ex: Cubone in Lavender Town, Onix in Rock Tunnel), 2) Come much later in the game. Meaning by the time you get to them, you won't get as much use out of them. This includes Pokemon in the Safari Zone whose catch mechanic is annoying or those in Cerulean Cave(Lickitung and Mewtwo are Yellow version notables here) or 3) Pokemon that don't even appear in Yellow version can be summoned via the Glitch. Weedle/Kakuna/Beedrill, Ekans/Arbok, Raichu, Meowth/Persian, Koffing/Weezing, Jynx, Electabuzz, and Magmar are not available in Yellow. You can also add in two Eevolutions(you only get one Eevee), Fighting Dojo(pick one, lose out on other), a Fossil(Helix or Dome choice excludes the other one) and Trade Evolutions except Machamp thanks to in-game trade(so Gengar, Golem and Alakazam have to be Glitch caught).

Glitch spawn Pokemon come in at level 7 so take time to level up but once they reach level 25(at this point in my journey) they can become a pivotal cog in your team.

If you play Yellow version normally, many Pokemon I've caught so far wouldn't even be available yet. Staryu, Tentacool, and Shellder wouldn't even be available yet for a Water type but thanks to glitch encounters, you can use them in a playthrough. Same with Growlithe and Magmar with respect to Fire types. How about Onix against Lt.Surge? Wouldn't be able to but can via Glitch. Ditto Rhyhorn.

TLDR: Glitch expands the pool of Pokemon I can use on a playthrough. Even Pokemon I can't get(like Raichu) are an option if I take the time to level them up but Raichu would require Ditto and unfortunately Ditto isn't available until Cinnabar Island 😭

Also no, I haven't even finished the Glitch spawn campaign. I got Omanyte, Electabuzz, Golem, Hitmonchan, Flareon, Eevee(for Jolteon/Vaporeon), Ekans, Koffing, Meowth, Lapras(before Silph), Scyther, Tangela, Raichu, Jynx, Lickitung, Mewtwo, Alakazam and Porygon left to go. Porygon costs 9999 Rocket Game Corner coins so…yeah.

    No kidding.

Journal Entry#9: The "anticlimactic" Lightning Lieutenant

Timestamp is now 8 hours and 44 minutes and the bulk of the time was trying to get one Pokemon to spawn. If you wonder why I glitch spawn so many Pokemon, this is another reason as to why(and why I like the overworld spawn mechanic where I can see what spawns, move away and respawn if needed). Not perfect but better than what I have to work with.

Anyways, with S.S Anne now done, I heal up at Pokemon Center and retrieve one of the Clefairy I caught at Mount Moon and make my way to Diglett Cave. This cave takes you all the way back to Route 2 but to an area that was previously inaccessible because we didn't have Cut. Now with the Cut HM, we can now access the area and even return to Viridian City to train low level Pokemon if we wanted to. Along the way to this new area, I catch a Diglett of my own(level 20) and when reaching the end, exit and find a Building with a Trainer inside who will trade Mr.Mime for a Clefairy. I make the trade and add this solid Psychic type to my Dex roster. I then cut the tree with Sandslash to the South and access the building to talk to an aide that gives you the Flash HM(05). Flash is entirely optional but I find it's helpful to have it for Rock Tunnel. Its also an alright debuff move and teach it to Butterfree.

Upon returning to Vermilion, I travel back to Cerulean to do the Trainer glitch. With Vermilion tagged, I teleport to it and proceed East to battle the Youngster I left on Route 11. Once defeated, I go to the Gym since my menu is now available to Cut the Tree down. The trainer in question is a Rocker in upper left so feel free to battle the Sailor(lower left) and Gentleman(upper right) beforehand or save them until after. Once the Rocker is defeated, I exit the Gym and trek back to Cerulean and Nugget Bridge to trigger an encounter with Tangela, a Grass type found in the Safari Zone. Another trainer later on has the same Special stat needed(and will note it on a future entry) but I figure I'd get it done now.

Once Tangela is caught, I return to Vermilion Gym, taking care of any remaining Trainers. I then unlock the Electronic Gate and face Lt.Surge in arguably the most anticlimactic Gym Fight there is. Sandslash is level 26 facing off against a level 28 Raichu. This Gym fight is so easy because the game literally gives you the means to beat him via Diglett Cave and is supposed to mirror the Anime.

    The fight goes as such…

Raichu: Uses Thunderbolt. Does not affect Sandslash.

    Sandslash: Dug a Hole.

Raichu: Uses Mega Punch but missed due to being underground.

    Sandslash: Used Dig. OHKO.

Lt.Surge: Woah your the real deal kid.

Ash: ... Your AI is retarded.

After defeating Surge, I talk to Officer Jenny who's seeking a good Trainer for a mischievous Squirtle. She notices the Thunder Badge and promptly gives it to us, finishing the Kanto trio.

I then backtrack to Cerulean and turn right to head East on Route 9. Route 9 has 9 Trainers but only one is of interest with respect to a Glitch catch. To carry it out though requires Healing at the Pokemon Center by Rock Tunnel entrance(and start of Route 10).

The first Lass Trainer has nothing but Grass Types so Butterfree clears it. The Hiker below has a Machop/Geodude so Butterfree clears the first one while Bulbasaur clears the 2nd and finally is permitted to evolve into Ivysaur. The next Trainer was changed to a Youngster and is meant to represent the Trainer AJ or the trainer with the Sandshrew. It knows Fissure but a quick Vine Whip usually KO's it. Above him is a Bug Trainer with two Beedrill. Bug vs. Bug fight ensues with Butterfree coming out victorious(my luck with Fury Attack remains though… ugh). We then proceed East and down to face the Hiker with Ivysaur before backtracking and going up to face another Bug Trainer with Pikachu. To the west of the Bug Trainer is a Jr.Trainer that we will glitch fight so save him for now. Instead go up and battle the Hiker(Ivysaur crushes) before heading East and jumping down to face the final Lass of Route 9 that has a single Meowth(Thunderbolt go brr).

I then heal at the Pokemon Center and then battle the lone Lass with Jigglypuff/Clefairy below Rock Tunnel. After that I enter the Grass above the Center to track down two catches in Magnemite(level 22) and Machop(level 16). Machop took forever to spawn(took like 80 tries before it finally appeared).

Now with both caught I heal/tag the Pokemon Center before returning to Nugget Bridge and the LDT there. I Glitch Teleport back to the Center and backtrack to face the Jr.Trainer using whatever Pokemon you feel like. Once defeated, backtrack to Nugget Bridge, using Cut to cut the Grass so you don't run into Wild Pokemon. Once you reach the Bridge, you will encounter a Lapras. Normally you have to wait until after your rival fight in Saffron before you can obtain this majestic Pokemon at level 15. Here you get it at level 7 and before Rock Tunnel where it's Water attacks will come in handy.

Diglett Cave is one of the best grinding spots in the game. Diglett give solid XP and lots of Speed EV to boot. I box Ivysaur, replacing it with Lapras and opt to box Pikachu for Magnemite. Got some training to do before I head into Rock Tunnel and another Glitch catch therein.

Journal Entry#10: This is the way…

Time stamp of 12 hours and 41 minutes... The slog is real...

Having acquired two new team members, I backtrack to Vermilion to do training in Diglett Cave. As I noted in the previous entry, they give solid XP and Speed EV's, making it the ideal place to max Speed for competitive purposes.

While there I trained everyone up to level 30 and it was rough with Magnemite because Diglett can OHKO him with Dig and with no Thundershock, I'm left with just Tackle and Sonicboom. Yet the reward was evolution into Magneton and benefitting from a base 120 Special stat. Lapras took a bit of coddling but once I reached level 15 or so, she began to hold her own and by the time she hit level 22, she was beginning to outspeed and OHKO them with Water Gun. I also evolved Abra while there since I still had him in my party for the upcoming segment and topped off Sandslash to level 30 too.

With everyone up to speed, I return to Rock Tunnel on Route 10. Rock Tunnel is dark, requiring Flash to light up the area. However, it's not mandatory to clear the cave as you can still navigate without it(and will be necessary to do glitch catches). Rock Tunnel has 15 Trainers within and 4 more on the other end of Route 10 before you reach Lavender Town. Also I have to point out that the game loves to flip me the bird. I spent a long time trying to find/catch Machop only for my first wild encounter in Rock Tunnel to be Machop. 🤦

The first Pokemaniac is of no consequence so defeat his Cubone as you see fit. The second Pokemaniac in the next area is of consequence if you screwed up or skipped glitch catching Pinsir via the S.S. Anne(his Slowpoke matches the Special stat). Now the next two trainers do matter with respect to glitch catches. The first one is optional as I see it because this Jr.Trainer yields Slowpoke, a Water type you can get later on via Surfing or at Seafoam Islands. Since we have the opportunity, I figure why not take it. Her Grass types are easy pickings for a Fire, Flying or Psychic type and her Bulbasaur has a Special stat of 37(what you need for Slowpoke). To perform the glitch catch, you dig/escape rope back to the center(heal up if needed) and backtrack to Cerulean/Nugget Bridge. Glitch Teleport back to Route 10(menu disabled) and go into Rock Tunnel and battle the Trainer in the Dark. Once done Dig/Escape Rope out and make your way back to Cerulean(cutting the Grass for no Wild encounters or just like it was with Lapras).

The Pokemaniac after her is also important because his Charmander/Cubone duo ultimately yields Scyther, the Safari Zone encounter with a low spawn rate and loves to run. Once both glitch catches out of the way, it's now smooth sailing as the rest of Trainers don't spawn anything we don't already have(or will need).

After the Pokemaniac are two Hikers. Lapras or anything strong on Rock Types handles them. Go up the Ladder and engage the three Hikers in this area with the same strategy and go down the Ladder.

In the next area, head West where you'll run into another Jr.Trainer. Dispose of her Normal types as you desire(I used Magneton), then battle the Hiker(Lapras) and Pokemaniac(Magneton) before going up the Ladder.

In the final area you'll come across three Jr.Trainers. The first two are readily visible. The first one is Bellsprout/Pidgey(Butterfree here) while the other is Pidgey/Rattata x2/Bellsprout(Magneton + Butterfree). The third Jr Trainer is to the west and has Meowth/Oddish/Pidgey(same Pokemon as before).

Exit and battle the 4 Trainers on Route 10. The Jr.Trainer has Flying types(Magneton), Lapras rolls the two Hikers and the Pokemaniac falls to Lapras + Magneton.

I finally reach Lavender Town and heal up at the Pokemon Center. Team is currently Magneton(32), Lapras(33), Butterfree(31) and Sandslash(30). Up next is frying some Fisherman and battling a couple Trainers on Route 8 as I sneak my way into the Underground path to Route 9 and Celadon where I'll acquire my 5th Team member and do more training to get it up to speed. Haven't decided what I'll do first(Rocket Game Corner or Erika's Gym. Leaning Rocket Game Corner).

Journal Entry#11: The Nature Loving Princess

Timestamp of 15 Hours and 12 minutes so not quite as long as last session but still long.

Having arrived in Lavender, I proceed to Route 12. There are 4 Fisherman Trainers that Magneton enjoyed electrocuting. Yet I can't go forward because a Snorlax blocks the path to Route 13 and to Route 11 so I turn back to Route 8. There I battle a Lass and her Clefairy before avoiding every other Trainer on the Route. The reason is to save them for later when I need them for Ditto glitch. I make my way into the Underground path and pop up on the other side on Route 9 and enter Celadon.

Once there, I made a beeline for the Coin Case so I could start getting Game Corner coins. You can find 270 on the ground in the Game Corner and from various NPC's but you'll have to spend 15k Poke(or actively play and get lucky) to get the 750 coins you'll need to buy Vulpix. This is the only way to get this Kitsune Pokemon and since it's my favorite, I immediately head to Pokemon Center to heal and to retrieve it. I then go to Pokemon Mart that has more variety than anywhere else in Kanto. Basically if you need something you'll most likely find it here(with few exceptions). I go to the roof to buy a Fresh Water. This is needed to unlock the path to Saffron and consequently easy access to Cerulean and Vermilion. With my Fire Fox in tow, I go train on Route 25 and Diglett Cave but go a bit overboard and don't stop until it's level 33(I like it ok).

So I decide to go battle the Trainers in Erika's Gym, retreating to heal status conditions. In total, there are 7 Trainers to fight and they all fall to my 🦊. Some of them can spawn Psyduck(Special stat of 47) but since Psyduck can be reliably found on Route 6 once you get Surf, I didn't feel compelled to do it. After defeating the last trainer, my Vulpix reached level 35 and learned Flamethrower or a 95 power Fire move(and one of the best moves in the game). At this point I could evolve my Fox but given my level, I figured I'd fight Erika as a Vulpix. I should note(and forgot to do this, hence why I'm noting it) that you can Glitch fight her to spawn a Farfetch'd. Farfetch'd are rare on Route 13/14 so getting a guarantee spawn is nothing to scoff at. To pull this off you battle one Trainer on Route 8(hence why I save them) and then battle Erika before going to your LDT(likely Nugget Bridge or Route 24). This outcome is only for Yellow since Vileplume has a Special of 67 or Missingno(Macargo) for Red/Blue players.

Her open is a level 30 Tangela and it falls to Flamethrower despite having solid defense(100 base Special too). A level 32 Weepinbel is next and tanks a Flamethrower to deal a decent Acid attack in return that lowers my Defense. I finish it off with a Quick Attack. Her ace in Gloom(level 32) comes out and succumbs to a critical Flamethrower. Rainbow Badge is now mine and can now use Strength outside of battle.

I heal at the Pokemon Center and make plans to invade Rocket Hideout next session.

Ah, so no need to trade with that one kid for their Farfetch'd now!
