Are you sure the opponent didn't play a Kieran? Had the same thing where I missed the card being played and they had a defiance band equipped but after checking the log it showed the kieran1 -

no because Path to the Peak only stops Rule box pokemon "abilities" Giratinas, knock out is still an attack not an "ability"2
