It's important because like @DoubleCure said, the resources you deny your opponent totally outweigh the issue of it shutting you stuff off. Without spending too much money, you can buy code cards on TCGPlayer, Troll and Toad, w/e. They're so cheap, and you'll get enough currency to run something more meta. Those starter decks have such a hard time against anything even remotely competitive, but for $20 you can pretty easily fill out a deck or two.
