Hello there, Trainers!

Since launching the limited beta we’ve received a wide range of reports, detailing issues that many of you have experienced with our matchmaking system. In reviewing this feedback, below are some of the common themes we’ve seen from online conversations and from our Support Team:

  • It takes too long to find an opponent.
  • It stalls when trying to find an opponent, requiring a restart of the game.
  • It only works at certain times/days.
  • It only works while playing on mobile.
  • It appears to work only after maintenance updates.

When we first looked into the data, there were no strong indications that matchmaking was experiencing issues or outright failing. With the increase in the size of the player base, we’ve been able to collect larger data samples and have started to notice patterns that will help locate why failures occurred.

The matchmaking system as a whole is currently under investigation as we aim to resolve the present issues and over time optimize the system overall. In the meantime, we’ll continue to provide updates to this thread as we zero in on a fix. We thank you for all the feedback and appreciate your patience while we handle this important issue.

Good to hear that a larger player-base is improving the quality of data. Thanks for the update.

My own personal experience -plus the number of people experiencing similar issues - tells me that this can't be something that we're falsely identifying.

Playing today after the maintenance I was able to find games for the first time in a week. There seems to be a very strong correlation between the time since the last maintenance and difficulties successfully matchmaking.

On a side note - this type of communication is greatly appreciated!

It's clear that the issue is a service degrading over time, perhaps due to a memory leak. The fact that restarting everything fixes it and then it gets worse over time strongly indicates that.

If the matchmaking issue is resolve, it would great improve the game. There are other issues but this one is by far the worst at the moment. We believe in you 😃👍

    Hey all!

We’ve got an update on this issue that we want to share with everyone today. Reports from players have suggested that matchmaking improves each time the servers are restarted, which happens most frequently when we’re implementing an update to the game.

We plan to start testing targeted restarts of our services to try and mitigate the issues currently being experienced with Matchmaking.

We will be running this test starting tomorrow at the following time:

    • Date: 10/07/22
    • Start Time: 10 AM PDT
    • Estimated Downtime: 1.5 Hours

While we’ve been investigating a permanent solution, we’ve also seen your reports about the “Cancel” button disappearing and reappearing while attempting to Matchmake. Experiencing this could mean your matchmaking attempt has failed. As an interim solution, pressing the “Cancel” button when it reappears may improve the chances of getting into a match without restarting the game.

Some players are also seeing the “Cancel” button remain during the Matchmaking process but are unable to connect to another player. If players cannot find a match in 2 or more minutes, this suggests a potential networking error, and it's recommended they restart their game at this time.

More details on when additional planned restarts will come should they prove to be successful.

We’ll provide players with updates as we continue investigating a permanent fix to this issue. A huge thank you to everyone for your patience, and for keeping us informed with your feedback and reports.

It's dead again. Please do maintenance ASAP. When the game is unplayable you don't need to worry about advance warning.

@TPCi_CursedSoup Unrelated to anything, but check the permissions on the News & Announcements forum.

@TechHog Appreciate the heads-up! It looks like permissions got slightly mixed up with the new forum design.

Feel free to call out any other oddities experienced with the change.

    Hey everyone!

Here is an update on where the team is currently at with the matchmaking issue. They identified the root cause of failures, and a fix is now being tested in-game.

Just for the extra knowledge, restarts to the matchmaking services are happening in real-time without any downtime to the game. The team receives alerts when failures start to increase, and that’s when these services on the backend are restarted. This will cause no interruptions to the TCG Live experience and not force anyone to restart their client.

Thank you all for your patience while we investigate a permanent fix to this issue.
