In PMD2, Why didn't Grovyle steal the future time gears?

He wouldn't have had to deal with the lake guardians or the army of explorers hunting him down if he had just stayed in the future, and headed straight for temporal tower when he got back to the past.
Is he stupid?!

the time gears disintegrated when temporal tower fell. the better question is, why do the lake trio not know about the time gears true purpose? did they just start guarding them without even knowing what they are?
